Die inhaltlichen und sprachlichen Gemeinsamkeiten der sogenannten Pastoralbriefe haben die bisherige Forschung zu der Annahme geführt, es handele sich bei diesen drei Briefen um intentional zusammengehörige Schreiben und demnach um „unzertrennliche Drillinge“ (Holtzmann). Da auf diese Weise jedoch die ebenfalls vorhandenen Differenzen zwischen den Briefen nicht hinreichend erklärt werden können, wagt die vorliegende Monographie einen neuen Zugang zur Pastoralbriefexegese: Die einzelnen Briefe werden nicht mehr als Teil eines „Corpus Pastorale“ verstanden, sondern als Einzelschreiben gewürdigt. Die Untersuchung zentraler Begriffe ermöglicht es, das Profil der einzelnen Schreiben herauszuarbeiten und dadurch das literarische Verhältnis der drei Briefe neu zu bestimmen. Im Ergebnis kann gezeigt werden, dass es sich bei dem ersten Timotheusbrief um den jüngsten der drei Briefe handelt. Dessen Verfasser setzt die beiden anderen Pastoralbriefe bereits als Teil der paulinischen Tradition voraus und rezipiert sie als Element seiner Autorfiktion. Diese Neubestimmung des literarischen Verhältnisses der Pastoralbriefe verändert nicht zuletzt die Voraussetzungen für das Verständnis der Entwicklung der Paulustradition.

What was Paul's attitude toward his own death? How did he act and what did he say and write in view of it? What hopes did he hold for himself beyond death? Alexander N. Kirk explores these questions through a close reading of four Pauline letters that look ahead to Paul's death and other relevant texts in the first two generations after Paul's death (AD 70-160). The author studies portraits of the departed Paul in Acts, 1 Clement, the letters of Ignatius, Polycarp's letter To the Philippians, and the Martyrdom of Paul. He also examines portraits of the departing Paul in 1 and 2 Corinthians, Philippians, and 2 Timothy, arguing that Paul's death did not primarily present an existential challenge, but a pastoral one. Although touching upon several areas of recent scholarly interest, Alexander N. Kirk sets forth a new research question and fresh interpretations of early Christian and Pauline texts.

This volume argues that Titus’s invocation of Crete affected the ways early readers developed their identities. Using archaeological data, classical writings, and early Christian documents, he describes multiple traditions that circulated on Crete and throughout the Roman Empire concerning Cretan Zeus, Cretan social structure, and Cretan Judaism. He then uses these traditions to interpret Titus and explain how the letter would intersect with and affect readers’ identities. Because readers had differing conceptions of Crete based on their location and access to and evaluation of Cretan traditions, readers would have developed their identities in multiple, conflictual, even contradictory ways.

There has been consistent apathy in recent years with regard to the long-standing debate surrounding the date of Acts. While the so-called majority of scholars over the past century have been lulled into thinking that Acts was written between 70 and 90 CE, the vast majority of recent scholarship is unanimously adamant that this middle-range date is a convenient, political compromise. Karl Armstrong argues that a large part of the problem relates to a remarkable neglect of historical, textual, and source-critical matters. Compounding the problem further are the methodological flaws among the approaches to the middle and late date of Acts. Armstrong thus demonstrates that a historiographical approach to the debate offers a strong framework for evaluating primary and secondary sources relating to the book of Acts. By using a historiographical approach, along with the support of modern principles of textual criticism and linguistics, the historical context of Acts is determined to be concurrent with a date of 62–63 CE.
