Recent advances in research show that the distinctive features of high medieval civilization began developing centuries earlier than previously thought. The era once dismissed as a "Dark Age" now turns out to have been the long morning of the medieval millennium: the centuries from AD 500 to 1000 witnessed the dawn of developments that were to shape Europe for centuries to come. In 2004, historians, art historians, archaeologists, and literary specialists from Europe and North America convened at Harvard University for an interdisciplinary conference exploring new directions in the study of that long morning of medieval Europe, the early Middle Ages. Invited to think about what seemed to each the most exciting new ways of investigating the early development of western European civilization, this impressive group of international scholars produced a wide-ranging discussion of innovative types of research that define tomorrow's field today. The contributors, many of whom rarely publish in English, test approaches extending from using ancient DNA to deducing cultural patterns signified by thousands of medieval manuscripts of saints' lives. They examine the archaeology of slave labor, economic systems, disease history, transformations of piety, the experience of power and property, exquisite literary sophistication, and the construction of the meaning of palace spaces or images of the divinity. The book illustrates in an approachable style the vitality of research into the early Middle Ages, and the signal contributions of that era to the future development of western civilization. The chapters cluster around new approaches to five key themes: the early medieval economy; early medieval holiness; representation and reality in early medieval literary art; practices of power in an early medieval empire; and the intellectuality of early medieval art and architecture. Michael McCormick's brief introductions open each part of the volume; synthetic essays by accomplished specialists conclude them. The editors summarize the whole in a synoptic introduction. All Latin terms and citations and other foreign-language quotations are translated, making this work accessible even to undergraduates. The importance of collective behavior in early medieval Europe By the fifth and sixth centuries, the bread and circuses and triumphal processions of the Roman Empire had given way to a quieter world. And yet, as Shane Bobrycki argues, the influence and importance of the crowd did not disappear in early medieval Europe. In The Crowd in the Early Middle Ages, Bobrycki shows that although demographic change may have dispersed the urban multitudes of Greco-Roman civilization, collective behavior retained its social importance even when crowds were scarce. Most historians have seen early medieval Europe as a world without crowds. In fact, Bobrycki argues, early medieval European sources are full of crowds—although perhaps not the sort historians have trained themselves to look for. Harvests, markets, festivals, religious rites, and political assemblies were among the gatherings used to regulate resources and demonstrate legitimacy. Indeed, the refusal to assemble and other forms of “slantwise” assembly became a weapon of the powerless. Bobrycki investigates what happened when demographic realities shifted, but culture, religion, and politics remained bound by the past. The history of crowds during the five hundred years between the age of circuses and the age of crusades, Bobrycki shows, tells an important story—one of systemic and scalar change in economic and social life and of reorganization in the world of ideas and norms.

La seconda metà del Duecento è stata interpretata dagli storici come una fase di trasformazione della civiltà comunale, con l’inversione di un secolare trend di crescita verso la cosiddetta «crisi del Trecento». Gli studi dedicati a questo importante snodo non ne hanno tuttavia esaurito la complessità, lasciando ampi margini di approfondimento, in particolare per ciò che riguarda la stretta connessione tra riassetto produttivo e commerciale, mutamento del tessuto sociale e cambiamenti politici. Pavia, nei decenni finali del secolo, stava affrontando una fase di rallentamento della propria economia e significative trasformazioni del profilo istituzionale. Lo studio di questa città ha costituito un valido terreno di ricerca per indagare questo controverso periodo: i segnali dei lenti mutamenti in atto sono emersi dalla lettura delle fonti, svelando il manifestarsi di un nuovo atteggiamento adottato dai cittadini nelle loro strategie d’investimento e di un più attento intervento da parte delle istituzioni, il Comune e la Mercanzia. Di fronte ai primi segnali di cambiamento, la reazione pavese si orientò verso l’intensificazione nello sfruttamento delle risorse del contado, la migliore strutturazione del profilo produttivo e la difesa degli spazi commerciali. Questi cambiamenti non furono disgiunti dalla parallela definizione, all’interno del Comune, di nuovi assetti istituzionali e di un rafforzamento dell’organizzazione mercantile, ai quali si accompagnò la progressiva affermazione della famiglia Beccaria con la conquista di una posizione di preminenza e la costituzione di una «proto signoria» dotata di una rappresentatività sociale molto alta. La vicenda che interessò Pavia si dimostra un valido esempio di come, a fronte di un percepibile rallentamento della congiuntura di fine secolo, le città dell’Italia settentrionale fossero ben lungi dall’aver esaurito le proprie risorse e seppero incanalare le tensioni verso la sperimentazione di nuovi equilibri.

Gli Atti che qui si presentano raccolgono relazioni svolte in due congressi, e precisamente la III Conferenza Italiana di Archeologia Medievale, svoltasi nell’Università di Cassino dal 17 al 19 dicembre 2003 sul tema ‘L’archeologia medievale in Italia nell’ultimo trentennio: un bilancio’, e il VI Congresso di Archeologia Medievale, svoltosi a Roma nella sede del CNR il 31 maggio e il I giugno 2006 sul tema ‘Archeologia Medievale nell’Italia centro-meridionale: insediamenti e territorio’. La maggior parte dei contributi si rivolge all’archeologia del paesaggio medievale nell’Italia centrale e meridionale, comprese le due isole maggiori. Vi si trovano messi a confronto i risultati delle più recenti ricerche topografiche sia ad ampio raggio che su singole realtà territoriali, offrendo così sia bilanci regionali (Abruzzo, Molise, Sicilia), che analisi su aree circoscritte, che tuttavia prospettano problematiche importanti, perché immettono nella discussione dati inediti derivanti da ricerche ancora in corso. I principali settori d’indagine che si riflettono in questi Atti sono l’archeologia urbana (presente con saggi su Benevento, L’Aquila e Siponto), l’incastellamento (si va dal Lazio al Molise, dalla Sardegna alla Sicilia), l’insediamento monastico (in Toscana e nel Lazio), la viabilità e la carta archeologica. Alcuni saggi affrontano i problemi di continuità e di innovazione della rete viaria tra tarda antichità e medioevo dalla Toscana al Molise e alla Sicilia; in particolare un corposo saggio si riferisce alla viabilità medievale del contado fiorentino e alle sue infrastrutture.

Il volume accoglie gli Atti del Convegno di Studi che si è svolto nel giugno del 2005 a Bologna nell’ambito di due progetti di ricerca PRIN interuniversitari tra le Università di Siena, Bologna, Venezia “Ca’ Foscari” e Padova, coordinati rispettivamente da Riccardo Francovich dal 2002 al 2004 e Sauro Gelichi dal 2004 al 2006. La tematica affrontata, tuttora di notevole complessità, ha comportato l’intersecarsi di diversi livelli di lettura: dalla tipologia e funzioni della struttura abitativa, alle sue valenze significative e rappresentative, alla natura dei materiali da costruzione, alla tecnologia della produzione, ai cicli produttivi, oltre che ad un’analisi comparativa delle strutture urbane e rurali.
