This book presents the findings of a multidisciplinary study on the effects of urban agriculture (UA) on the social, economic and environmental aspects of the quality of life in Sofia - the capital of Bulgaria. The analyses are based on a sociological survey representative of 3 districts of Sofia (among 750 people), in-depth interviews, focus groups, expert statements, ecological monitoring of UA sites, and spatial mapping of natural resources for UA. It also focuses on UA effects on the social well-being of citizens and communities, the correlation between social capital and UA attitudes, the challenges for UA to integrate disadvantaged social groups, the factors for success of small UA businesses, as well as the role of policy and civil society in developing UA. This work is also important for the analysis of the underlying links between all aspects of urban agriculture, many of which are valid beyond the local socio-economic context and environmental specifics of the city of Sofia.

This book explains how cultural heritage can be a tool for enhancing urban agriculture and improving landscape and life quality. It cuts across the existing literature and fills the gaps between urban agriculture, considered as a food, social and environmental opportunity and cultural heritage, considered as resource. It focuses the role of the countryside for urban areas, in the history of the city and today. London, Ontario was once closely tied to its local food production and distribution. Since 1835, this close connection with food was facilitated by places like the Covent Garden Market. London and many other cities were affected by technological advancements primarily in transportation that created the rift between producer and consumer in its food network, causing the processes and systems of food to become invisible. The goal of the thesis is to offer the residents of the Hamilton Road neighbourhood in London, Ontario an affordable alternative to their commercial food system. Urban agriculture is also the lens through which broader themes such as inter-disciplinary urban design, biophilia, social equality, and socio-environmentalism are analyzed. The exploratory research and analysis evaluates the food system currently in place in London, and more specifically the Hamilton Road neighbourhood. The thesis outlines the advantages of the inherent strengths and proposes interventions to address the weaknesses of London's food system. The final design proposes to use an integrated systems approach at a city-wide and then a neighbourhood scale to re-imagine the food system as a part of a larger urban network. A strategy for the implementation of urban agriculture in an existing urban setting at the scale of the neighbourhood is the proposal of this thesis. Hamilton Road is the chosen neighbourhood for implementation because it displays the ideal social conditions for promoting the uptake of an urban agricultural movement. By creating healthy, socially inclusive public spaces and private spaces that reconnect people to nature-to heal the gap between producer and consumer within the food network-the project seeks to improve the quality of life by improving food consciousness in London, Ontario.

As a result of rapid urbanisation and the formulation of the “Smart Cities” concept, and of trends in sustainability and renewability, growing cities have begun to introduce basic measures for the return food production closer to them. There has always been a very particular connection between food growing and technology. Traditional thinking maintains that technology and urban life stand in opposition to the peaceful and quiet life on the farm. Food is produced and distributed globally nowadays. This makes the chain of distribution significantly more complex, and great stress is laid on food safety. Contemporary consumers are more and more interested in the origin and production technology of the food they eat. The provision of organic food, locally produced food, food “picked that day” are only some of the trends that have been on the increase. Vertical food growing requiring the intensive use of energy is still in its infancy. There are, however, many initiatives which are leading to rapid advances. Vertical farming in open or enclosed spaces has, therefore, the potential to respond to the demographic challenges faced by Smart Cities. Rapid urbanization will make urban agriculture more significant. Periurban, or suburban agriculture, is a part of urban culture. It can greatly contribute to the food supply of the entire city. This raises the question of the designation of the peri-urban zone and of its capacity to feed big cities. This paper is an attempt at describing the elements of a new agrarian politics that could help tackle the problems of resource allocation and, at the same time, provide citizens with a better quality of life.
