Don Shockley may be the only person in America who likes to wait. He has discovered that active waiting opens the door to spiritual experiences that are often humorous as well as serious and deep. He believes that the key to prayer is not in the act of asking but in the art of listening. For more than twenty-five years he has transformed the necessity to wait into an opportunity to look, listen and learn. More often than not this distinctive form of meditation has been practiced in urban environments: waiting rooms of doctors and dentists; on buses, planes and trains; in bakeries, coffee shops and college cafeterias; in libraries, parks and bars. These spiritual interludes have been captured in exceptionally vivid writing; you can "see" what the author is saying. When the late Howard Thurman, one of America's foremost spiritual thinkers, saw some of the early pieces included in this book, he said they were "precisely on target" and should be shared. Over the years since, these Private Prayers in Public Places have been well received when read before various groups, and at long last they are now available in print.

This volume is a first attempt to investigate the impact of urban space on prayers and related religious thought and belief in ancient religions from the first to the sixth century CE. Taking its lead from the spatial turn in scholarship, methodologically it is an attempt to replace the hitherto customary focus on the forms and semantics of prayer with an urban-spatial model. This model understands prayers as performances that are embedded and embodied in urban space as well as texts producing and inspired by imaginations of space. To allow for a broader comparison, this volume covers prayers and spaces of various religions all over the ancient Mediterranean, from Roman and North African polytheisms through early Christianity to Byzantine Christianity and early Islam.

"Global Prayers examines questions of redemption and liberation in the cities of the world. New religious practices permeate public spaces and the cultural scenes of these metropolises. Religious communities inscribe themselves into urban life acoustically, typographically, and architecturally. They generate their own aesthetics and forms of consumption. Urban studies as well as artistic productions have long viewed religion and urbanity as mutually exclusive. Global Prayers, in contrast, puts the case for just such reciprocal influences. The publication is based on the work of an international network of researchers as well as artists, focusing on diverse urban assemblages and religious communities. The contributions record their movements and critically engage with them. With contributions by: Özge Aktaş & Eda Ünlü-Yücesöy, Nezar AlSayyad, Yasmeen Arif, Adé Bantu, Jochen Becker, Sabine Bitter & Helmut Weber, Regina Bittner, Filip De Boeck, Hiba Bou Akar, Thomas Burkhalter, Ayşe ÇAvdar, Aryo Danusiri, Amanda Dias, Ronald DüKer & Stefanie Peter, Alexa FäRber, David Garbin, Hengameh Golestan, Gerda Heck, Anne Huffschmid, Johannes Ismaiel-Wendt, George Jose, Katrin Klingan, Stephan Lanz, Brian Larkin, Ferdinand Mbecha, Birgit Meyer, Aernout Mik, Martijn Oosterbaan, Joseph Rustom, Sandra SchäFer, Werner Schiffauer, Surabhi Sharma, Abdoumaliq Simone, David Spero, Hidayet Tuksal, Asonzeh Ukah, Camilo José Vergara, Kathrin Wildner, Paola Yacoub" Présentation de l'éditeur.

Prayer Revolution written by John Smed and has been published by Moody Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-05 with Religion categories.

Are you praying constricted prayers or disruptive ones? Most prayers are constricted ones. They’re prayers that only focus on one part of the Lord’s Prayer: “give us our daily bread.” They’re usually focused on self and envision God as a heavenly caretaker. Disruptive prayers, on the other hand, are powerful, uncommon, and deeply biblical. They focus on God rather than self, seek to advance the kingdom, and submit all things to God. They are also prayed with a profound belief that prayer actually accomplishes something. When we pray disruptive prayers, that’s when the revolution begins. This book shows you how to equip leaders, fuel kingdom movements, and do real damage to the powers of darkness in the here and now. But most of all, discover how your own heart will be transformed as you begin to see how much bigger prayer, and God, is than you ever thought possible.
