Civic Politics In The Rome Of Urban Viii written by Laurie Nussdorfer and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-23 with History categories.

In this colorful depiction of daily political life in Baroque Rome, Laurie Nussdorfer argues that the lay persons managed to sustain a civic government under the increased papal absolutism of Urban VIII (1623-1644), who oversaw both sacred and secular life. Focusing on the S.P.Q.R. (the Senate and the Roman People), which was ministered from the capitoline Hill, she shows that it provided political representation for lay members of the urban elite, carried out the work of local government, and served as a symbol of the Roman voice in public life. Through a detailed study of how civic authorities derived their sense of legitimacy and how lay subjects maneuvered in informal and disguised ways to block or criticize the papal regime, the author advances a new way of conceiving politics under an absolute ruler. As Nussdorfer analyzes the complex interactions between the lay administration and Urban VIII and his family, the papal administration, and Romans of the upper and lower classes, she also provides fresh insights into the actual practice of early modern government. She takes the plague threat of the early 1630s, the War of Castro (1641-1644), and the interregnum following the pope's death as important test cases of the state's power in times of crisis. Laurie Nussdorfer is Assistant Professor of History and Letters at Wesleyan University. Originally published in 1992. Urban VIII and Alexander VII each occupied the papal throne during the seventeenth century, and were munificent and discriminating patrons of the arts, as well as men of conspicuous erudition and imagination. They were also sensitive, inspired, and highly accomplished poets. The cultural milieu from which they sprang was a halcyon era in which literature and the arts flourished with all the apollonian refulgence of a splendid, and sometimes extravagant, opulence. The present work of adaptation, employing strictly the medium of English heroic verse, comprises a choice cornucopia of the lyrical musings of these two baroque pontiffs—compositions of orphic mellifluence and sidereal luster, which are both rare literary curiosities and ornately fashioned treasures of virtuosic neo-classical poesy. These adaptations attempt to lift the tenebrous veil of alterity and obscurity which has hitherto concealed these masterworks, diligently repolishing their aureate, marble, or onyx surfaces, and humbly offering their nacreous arabesques and argent-spangled trefoils to the discerning eye of the contemporary anglophone reader.

Excerpt from Urban VIII: Being the Lothian Prize Essay for 1903 The first section of this essay has been rewritten, and several additions and corrections have been made in the subsequent pages, but in the main it appears in the form in which it was written for the Lothian prize. For the sake of clearness the terms "catholic" and "heretic" have been employed in the sense in which pope Urban would have used them. Names of places and of individuals have been kept as far as possible in the form most familiar to English ears. It has been necessary to place in the fourth section some events which occurred before the treaty of Gherasco. The writer's thanks are due to Dr. Ehrle and the other authorities of the Vatican library, who gave him every facility for the consultation of manuscripts; to Mr. H. A. L. Fisher, Fellow of New College, Oxford, who read the essay through and offered several very valuable suggestions; and to Mr. Arthur Owen, Assistant Master at Cheltenham College, who, besides making some helpful criticisms, has kindly revised the proof-sheets. A fascinating insight into the most talented Latin poets to occupy the Papal throne after Pius II Piccolomini in the 15th century, this book offers translations of and commentaries on the major poems of the three popes (all Italians): Urban VIII Barberini, Alexander VII Chigi and Leo XIII Pecci. Their highly accomplished Neo-Latin poems owe much to the major Latin poets and are significant instances of classical reception, but also cast an interesting light on their lives, times and papacies. Urban (elected pope in 1623) published a mixture of secular and religious verse, drawing on the hexameter epistles of Horace and the lyrics of Catullus and writing Horatian material in praise of Alessandro Farnese, governor of the Netherlands for Philip II of Spain, and the Spanish martyr St Laurence. Alexander (elected pope in 1655) like Urban combines secular and religious themes and often uses Horatian frameworks, writing hexameter accounts of some of the journeys he made as a papal diplomat in Germany and an Horatian ode on the fall of the Protestant stronghold of La Rochelle (1628). Leo's poetry was mostly religious and published during his papacy (1878-1903); his Horatian ode on the new millennium of 1900 was widely read, and other works include an elegy which links a shrine of the Virgin with the Battle of Lepanto; an Horatian satire on moderate diet; and hymns to saints which combine early Christian and Horatian forms.

Kirwin (art history, U. of Guelph, Ontario) presents the first book-length study on the Baldachin inside St. Peter's, Rome, situating the monument in the center or Urban VIII's grand plan for his Pontificate (1623-1644), and critically evaluating the structure's design, construction, and meaning. The study unearths the Pontiff's rearmament of Rome and the Vatican within the context of the Baldachin's meaning, and supplies new interpretations of Gian Lorenzo Bernini's early development as an architect. Includes illustrations, photographs, and architectural plans. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
