Madrid und Barcelona, die beiden größten Städte Spaniens, erlebten seit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts infolge massiver Landfluchtbewegungen ein starkes Wachstum. Dieser Prozess beschleunigte sich in der Zeit der Franco-Diktatur aufgrund intensiver Förderung des Industriesektors durch das Regime. Im Zuge dieser Entwicklung entstanden neue städtische Peripherien, an denen sich der gesamtgesellschaftliche Wandel von einer agrarischen in eine urbane Gesellschaft manifestierte. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht erstmals umfassend die Entwicklungsprozesse an den Peripherien beider Metropolen von den 1950er Jahren bis in die 1970er Jahre. Mit einem komparativen Ansatz untersucht Anna Pelka das Zusammenwirken unterschiedlicher Akteure in den Verstädterungs- und Urbanisierungsprozessen sowie das Verhältnis von öffentlicher Steuerung und Selbstregulation. Es entsteht eine facettenreiche Darstellung von Formen und Logiken formeller und informeller Stadtentwicklung im Süden Europas. Die Frage nach Grenzziehungen im urbanen Raum, nach Zugehörigkeiten und Exklusionen und damit verbundenen Fragen städtischer Identitäten unter den Bedingungen der spanischen Diktatur führt zu vielfältigen Erkenntnissen über Stadtentwicklung in der Moderne.

Around 1900 cities in Southern and Eastern Europe were persistently labeled "backward" and "delayed." Allegedly, they had no alternative but to follow the role model of the metropolises, of London, Paris or Vienna. This edited volume fundamentally questions this assumption. It shows that cities as diverse as Barcelona, Berdyansk, Budapest, Lviv, Milan, Moscow, Prague, Warsaw and Zagreb pursued their own agendas of modernization. In order to solve their pressing problems with respect to urban planning and public health, they searched for best practices abroad. The solutions they gleaned from other cities were eclectic to fit the specific needs of a given urban space and were thus often innovative. This applied urban knowledge was generated through interurban networks and multi-directional exchanges. Yet in the period around 1900, this transnational municipalism often clashed with the forging of urban and national identities, highlighting the tensions between the universal and the local. This interurban perspective helps to overcome nationalist perspectives in historiography as well as outdated notions of "center and periphery." This volume will appeal to scholars from a large number of disciplines, including urban historians, historians of Eastern and Southern Europe, historians of science and medicine, and scholars interested in transnational connections.

Traditional approaches to understand space tend to view public space mainly as a shell or container, focussing on its morphological structures and functional uses. That way, its ever-changing meanings, contested or challenged uses have been largely ignored, as well as the contextual and on-going dynamics between social actors, their cultures, and struggles. The key role of space in enabling spatial opportunities for social action, the fluidity of its social meaning and the changing degree of "publicness" of a space remain unexplored fields of academic inquiry and professional practice. Public Space and Relational Perspectives offers a different understanding of public spaces in the city. The aim of the book is to (re)introduce the lived experiences in public life into the teaching curricula of those academic disciplines which deal with public space and the built environment, such as architecture, planning and urban design, as well as the social sciences. Gleichzeitig prägen sie auch die städtische Öffentlichkeit, indem sie sich aktiv an ihrer Konstitution beteiligen. Die Autorin identifiziert sieben unterschiedliche Typen zivilgesellschaftlicher Kollektive, die jeweils ganz eigene Medienpraktiken und -ensembles zur öffentlichen Kommunikation einsetzen. Sie verfolgen dabei sehr unterschiedliche Ziele innerhalb der Stadtöffentlichkeit und agieren innerhalbjeweils sehr verschiedener Netzwerke.
