Urbanism Under Sail: An Archaeology of Fluit Ships in Early Modern Everyday Life - Niklas Eriksson. In the seventeenth- and early eighteenth centuries fluits were the most common ships used in the trade between the Dutch Republic and Sweden. The fluit was ubiquitous, becoming such a fixture in both the maritime and urban landscapes that these ships were almost invisible. Despite there having been thousands of more or less identical ships built, surprisingly little is known about their sculptural embellishments, how space on board was arranged and how early modern everyday life was lived on board. Far from all voyages reached their destination. Down in the cold and dark brackish water of the Baltic Sea, the conditions for preservation of organic material are optimal and several of the unfortunate fluits still remain intact today. Inspired by phenomenological approaches in archaeology this thesis focuses on the lived experience of fluits. Using well-preserved wrecks it examines seemingly mundane everyday aspects, from the physical arrangements for eating, sleeping and answering nature's call to their rearrangement for naval use. The study concludes with a consideration of the architectonical contribution of the fluit to the urban landscape.

The sea has many faces. Some are calm and welcoming, others ferocious and death-dealing. For centuries of human history, the sea has seen peaceful trade and war, life and death and failure. In Facing the Sea we meet Swedish experiences of the sea. We can read about smugglers from the Åland Islands, about British privateers seizing Swedish ships, and about Swedish naval officers defending the honor of the flag. We also learn what a disaster at sea or the salvage of a shipwreck can say about past and present societies, and why more and more Swedes choose burial at sea for their loved ones. This book focuses on issues of method and interpretation in studies of submerged landscapes, concentrating on illustrations and case studies from around Europe with additional examples from other parts of the world. Such landscapes were once exposed as dry land during the low sea levels that prevailed during the glacial periods that occupied most of the past million years and provided extensive new territories for human exploitation. Their study today involves underwater investigation, using techniques and strategies which are clearly set out in these chapters. The underwater landscape provides a rich source of information about the archaeology of human settlement and long-term changes in environment, climate and sea-level. This book highlights how such information can be revealed and interpreted. The examples presented here and the focus on techniques make this book of worldwide relevance. Chapters describe examples of underwater archaeological investigation as well as collaboration with offshore industries and legal, management and training issues relating to underwater cultural heritage. Such studies point to the significance of this drowned landscape, and readers are invited to consider its human impact in terms of past settlement and population dispersal through palaeolandscape reconstruction and interpretation in relation to broader themes in human prehistory. While both public opinion and scholars around the world are currently pointing out the danger of increasingly popular life-logging devices, this book articulates this debate by distinguishing between automatic and manual life-logging approaches. Since new definitions of life-logging have excluded the latter approach and have been mainly focused on effortless life-logging technologies such as Google Glass and Quantified Self applications in general, this book theoretically frames life-stowing. Through extensive etymological research, this book defines life-stowing as a manual and effortful practice conducted by life-stowers, individuals who devote their life to sampling reality in predefined frameworks. Also as part of this book, an historical overview introduces life-stowers and distinguishes between Apollonian and Dionysian varieties of these practitioners. Lastly, in order to understand the future reception of lifestowing, particularly in relation to digital media, this book discloses the author’s ongoing life-stowing project to a small audience.

Händelsen har fått en undanskymd roll i historieböckerna vilket även spillt över på hur vraket hanterats. Trots att det ligger lättillgängligt i Stockholms skärgård har vraket aldrig blivit föremål för mer ingående arkeologiska studier. I stället har det kunnat utsättas för kommersiell bärgningsverksamhet. Med utgångspunkt i Riksäpplets öde diskuterar arkeologen Niklas Eriksson historiebruk och drivkrafter bakom studier av vraken efter stormaktstidens krigsfartyg. Genom att dokumentera det som finns kvar på botten och även efterforska, sammanställa och analysera de föremål som tidigare har bärgats visar han att även vrak som fått en marginell roll i historieböckerna kan ha en stor arkeologisk potential. Författaren tar här avstamp i vetenskapliga frågeställningar som diskuterar skeppet som materiell kultur och levererar en alternativ berättelse som ger en fördjupad bild av stormaktstiden och dess sjökrig.

I juni 1522 seglade ett antal inhyrda fartyg från Lübeck in i Slätbaken i Östergötland. Deras ankomst blev startskottet för den statliga svenska örlogsflottan.
