Nicht nur von Abenteuerlust und Neugier getrieben, sondern auch aus beruflichen Gründen wollen wir neue Welten entdecken, fremde Länder und Kulturen kennen lernen. Bereits in der Schule lernen wir zwei bis drei Fremdsprachen. In unserem sozialen Umfeld haben wir Bekannte anderer Nationalitäten. Kurz und knapp, wir sind mit dem Begriff und der Bedeutung von Interkulturalität vertraut und meinen uns in der Welt auszukennen. Und doch begegnet uns der Begriff des Kulturschocks häufig in der Alltagswelt. Es scheint geradezu, als das der Kulturschock unabdingbar mit Interkulturalität in Beziehung steht. Doch wie ist das möglich? Wir verbinden Interkulturalität mit Bewusstseinserweiterung, weiterführende Kompetenzen für den Beruf, bessere Zusammenarbeit und Toleranz im Miteinander durch Auslandserfahrungen. Der Kulturschock hingegen wird mit negativen Erfahrungen und Erlebnissen, die man in einer fremden Kultur gemacht hat, in Zusammenhang gebracht; ganz der Maxime „Wenn ich im Ausland bin, treffe ich auf eine andere Kultur und das Zusammentreffen sowie meine Erfahrungen mit dieser können einen Schock auslösen“. Der Schock wird mit befremdeten Erfahrungen assoziiert und somit als negativ bewertet. Demnach müsste man sich doch vor einem Kulturschock schützen und Kontakte mit fremden Kulturen vermeiden. Der Kulturschock müsste dann eigentlich Interkulturalität verhindern. Dem Begriff des Kulturschocks scheint noch eine andere Bedeutung innezuwohnen. Vielleicht scheinen sich Interkulturalität und Kulturschock doch nicht auszuschließen. Ich möchte in diesem Essay den Gedanken des Kulturschocks klären und zeigen, dass er weniger Moment als vielmehr Prozess ist. Zudem wird verdeutlicht, dass der Kulturschock geradezu eine der bedeutendsten Komponenten von Interkulturalität darstellt und Bedingung positiver Fremdbegegnung ist. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit liegt daher der Fokus auf der Darstellung des Verlaufs eines Kulturschocks sowie dessen Chancen, Gefahren und Ueberwindung.
