This study highlights USAF plans, policies, and operations in Southeast Asia during 1965, especially as they were significantly changed by the President's key decisions to bomb North Vietnam and transform the U.S. advisory role in South Vietnam to one of active military support. The author focuses on USAF participation in the development of policy for prosecuting the war, the build-up of U.S. military strength in the theater, and the gradually intensified air operations against enemy forces in South Vietnam, North Vietnam, and Laos. USAF Plans and Operations in Southeast Asia, 1965 follows two other recent studies by the USAF Historical Division Liaison Office dealing specifically with the war: USAF Plans and Policies in South Vietnam and Laos, 1964 and USAF Plans and Policies in South Vietnam, 1961-1963. In addition, the USAF Historical Division Liaison Office is currently preparing a companion study of Air Force plans and policies dealing with personnel, logistics, construction, and other activities during 1965 in support of the operational forces in Southeast Asia.

The role of the Air Force is to defend the US and protect its interests through airpower, guided by the principles of joint operations and the tenets of airpower. Airpower is the ability to project military power or infl uence through the control and exploitation of air, space, and cyberspace to achieve strategic, operational, or tactical objectives. Airpower exploits the third dimension of the operational environment, the electromagnetic spectrum, and time to leverage speed, range, flexibility, precision tempo, and lethality to create effects from and within the air, space, and cyberspace domains. From this multi-dimensional perspective, Airmen can apply military power against an enemy`s entire array of diplomatic, informational, military, and economic instruments of power, at long ranges and on short notice. The Air Force Operations & Planning SMARTbook covers the fundamentals, principles and tenets of airpower; airpower operations (Air Force missions, roles & functions); command and control (AOC, AFFOR & JFACC); planning for operations (AFOPE, JOPPA, joint air tasking cycle, OODA); targeting and assessment; and agile combat support (ACS)! *** Find the latest edition of this book and the rest of our series of military reference SMARTbooks at the publishers website: www.TheLightningPress.com ***

Military and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-15 with categories.

Covering war strategy, tactics, effects-based operations (EBO), AETF, and air expeditionary wing (AEW), this publication, AFDD 2, Operations and Organization, is the companion to AFDD 1 and provides the next level of granularity. It describes how the US Air Force organizes and employs air and space power at the operational level across the range of military operations. The concepts discussed in this publication-the role and responsibilities of the senior warfighting Airman; the basics behind our expeditionary organizational model; the fundamentals of joint and Service command arrangements; how we plan operations; and the means by which we place the collective capabilities of air and space power into the hands of a single Airman-are the foundations for all our operations. We are in the middle of a long, shadowy war that will be punctuated by episodes of full-up, conventional operations. Many different types of operations will occur simultaneously; tempo and objectives may shift rapidly. We will be challenged to adapt well-practiced tactics and to think in new ways to solve unforeseen challenges. As the war evolves, so must we. Some aspects of warfighting, however, will remain constant. Our doctrine captures these enduring aspects. Our success in meeting the challenges of this rapidly changing world depends on our understanding and applying our doctrine. Doctrine describes not only how we would command and employ air and space forces today, but is also the point of departure to guide us in meeting the challenges of tomorrow. Air and space power is a critical element in protecting our Nation and deterring aggression. It will only remain so if we, as professional Airmen, study, evaluate, and debate our capabilities and the environment of the future. Just as technology, world threats, and opportunities change, so must our doctrine. Each of you must be articulate, knowledgeable, and unapologetic advocates of our doctrine. We must understand what it means to be an Airman and be able to articulate what air and space power can bring to the joint fight. I encourage you to read our doctrine, discuss it, and practice it. Contents: Chapter One - An Introduction To Air And Space Operations * Chapter Two - Operations * Chapter Three - Commanding Us Air Force Forces * Chapter Four - Organizing Us Air Force Forces * Chapter Five - The Air And Space Component Within The Joint Force * Chapter Six - Planning For Operations * Chapter Seven - Air And Space Operations Centers * Chapter Eight - The Affor Staff

USAF Plans and Policies in South Vietnam, 1961-1963, follows two previous studies prepared on counterinsurgency by the USAF Historical Division Liaison Office: USAF Counterinsurgency Doctrines and Capabilities, 1961-1962, and USAF Special Air Warfare Doctrines and Capabilities, 1963. This study outlines the role of Headquarters USAF in aiding the South Vietnamese effort to defeat the communist led Viet Cong. The author begins by discussing general U.S. policy leading to increased military and economic assistance to South Vietnam. He then describes the principal USAF deployments and augmentations, Air Force efforts to obtain a larger military planning role, some facets of plans and operations, the Air Force-Army divergencies over the use and control of airpower in combat training and in testing, defoliation activities, and USAF support for the Vietnamese Air Force. The study ends with an account of events leading to the overthrow of the Diem government in Saigon late in 1963. Because this study emphasizes plans and policies, no effort has been made to chronicle the hundreds of individual air actions in which USAF units participated. However, operational data for the 1961-1963 period is available in the appendices and in other sources, including histories of the participating commands and units, some of which are on file in the USAF Historical Division Liaison Office.

During the middle and late 1970s, the United States Air Force Historical Research Center, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama produced a series of 17 monographs that detailed the history of the Vietnam War. These studies were classified as being Top Secret for many years and were only recently released to the public. The core of these monographs is the series that deal with the political, operational and technical development of the Air Force participation in the Vietnam War. These remarkable documents contain a wealth of historical data that explain the background and reasoning behind many controversial decisions. This compilation has taken these monographs and assembled them into a single narrative. The documents have been painstakingly remastered and reset to the printed page but their editorial integrity has been scrupulously preserved.

"When appropriate, the U.S. Air Force needs to be prepared to supply joint task force (JTF) headquarters. If the U.S. Air Force takes the steps necessary to produce JTF-capable units, both the service and the nation would benefit. The authors consider the nature of JTF command, survey command-related developments in other services and in other elements of the defense community, and examine four JTF operations. They raise issues for the Air Force to consider and offer a set of recommendations aimed at enhancing the Air Force's ability to staff and run JTF headquarters."--Provided by publisher.
