The United States Air Force Statistical Digest has been published each year since 1948. While the Digest has had several changes in format over the years, the original purpose for publishing it has not changed. The purpose has been, and will continue to be, to compile each fiscal year a single authoritative archival document providing a statistical description of the Air Force in terms of resources, organizations, and major activities. Individuals requiring a historical description in statistical terms of each fiscal year of the Air Force's existence have found the Digest to be an invaluable addition to their information reference sources. This Fiscal Year 1993 Statistical Digest continues a format containing only actuals. Projections for the future included in previous Statistical Digests were eliminated with the publication of the FY91 Statistical Digest. Tabular and graphic presentations of data have been reformatted. The United States Air Force Statistical Digest entitled "Fiscal Year 1992/1993 Estimate" published and distributed by this office in late 1992 should no longer be used as a source of any data for FY 1991, FY 1992, and FY 1993. Much of the data in this late December 1992 edition of the Statistical Digest were estimates. The latest and authoritative edition of the Statistical Digest is this edition entitled "Fiscal Year 1993" which contains only actual data.

The United States Air Force Statistical Digest is produced as a service of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force (Financial Management and Comptroller). Last year, we consolidated the publication of the USAF Summary, the Budget Book and the Budget in Brief into the USAF Statistical Digest. The tables and charts have been updated to include fiscal years 1992 and 1993 budget estimates as well as the fiscal year 1990 personnel and operations figures. The Pocket Summary, a one-page pamphlet containing seven tables of interest.

In commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Korean War, the official history offices of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force and their respective historical associations collaborated to sponsor as comprehensive a symposium as possible, including as participants some of the coalition partners who contributed forces and weapons to the war. The intent of this symposium, titled Coalition Air Warfare during the Korean War, 1950 -1953, was to focus not only on the contributions made by the armed forces of the United States, but also on those of America's allies. The diverse group of panelists and speakers included not only scholars with subject matter expertise, but also veteran soldiers, sailors, and airmen who had served in that conflict. It was hoped that the melding of these diverse perspectives would provide interesting, if sometimes conflicting, views about the Korean War. The symposium organizers designated an agenda of six specific panels for investigation, including Planning and Operations; Air Superiority, Air Support of Ground Forces; Air Interdiction and Bombardment, Air Reconnaissance and Intelligence, and Logistical Support of Air Operations. Each session began with commentary by the panel chairman, which was followed by formal papers, and in some instances included a lively question and answer session. The papers and most of the proceedings found their way into print and are recorded here in an effort to permanently capture the activities, challenges, contributions, and heroics of the coalition air forces and the airmen who fought during the Korean conflict.
