Students and professionals alike have long felt the need of a modern source of practical advice on the use of optical tools in scientific research. Walter T. Welford's Useful Optics meets this need. Welford offers a succinct review of principles basic to the construction and use of optics in physics. His lucid explanations and clear illustrations will particularly help those whose interests lie in other areas but who nevertheless must understand enough about optics to create the experimental apparatus necessary to their research. Consistently emphasizing applications and practical points of design, Welford covers a host of topics: mirrors and prisms, optical materials, aberration, the limits of image formation and resolution, illumination for image-forming systems, laser beams, interference and interferometry, detectors and light sources, holography, and more. The final chapter deals with putting together an experimental optics system. Many areas of the physical sciences and engineering increasingly demand an appreciation of optics. Welford's Useful Optics will prove indispensable to any researcher trying to develop and use effective optical apparatus. Walter T. Welford (1916-1990) was professor of physics at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine from 1951 until his death. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Optical Society of America.

This book discusses statistical methods that are useful for treating problems in modern optics, and the application of these methods to solving a variety of such problems This book covers a variety of statistical problems in optics, including both theory and applications. The text covers the necessary background in statistics, statistical properties of light waves of various types, the theory of partial coherence and its applications, imaging with partially coherent light, atmospheric degradations of images, and noise limitations in the detection of light. New topics have been introduced in the second edition, including: Analysis of the Vander Pol oscillator model of laser light Coverage on coherence tomography and coherence multiplexing of fiber sensors An expansion of the chapter on imaging with partially coherent light, including several new examples An expanded section on speckle and its properties New sections on the cross-spectrum and bispectrum techniques for obtaining images free from atmospheric distortions A new section on imaging through atmospheric turbulence using coherent light The addition of the effects of “read noise” to the discussions of limitations encountered in detecting very weak optical signals A number of new problems and many new references have been added Statistical Optics, Second Edition is written for researchers and engineering students interested in optics, physicists and chemists, as well as graduate level courses in a University Engineering or Physics Department.

Optics And Lasers written by M. Young and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-11 with Science categories.

The field of optics has changed greatly in the past dozen years or so. Partly because of the applied or engineering nature of much of modern optics, there is need for a practical text that surveys the entire field. Such a book should not be a classical-optics text, but, rather, it should be strong on principles, applications and instrumentation, on lasers, holography and coherent light. On the other hand, it should concern itself relatively little with such admittedly interesting phenomena as the formation of the rainbow or the precise deter mination of the speed of light. My purpose, therefore, has been to write an up-to-date textbook that surveys applied or engineering optics, including lasers and certain other areas that might be called modern optics. I have attempted to treat each topic in sufficient depth to give it considerable engineering value, while keeping it as free of unnecessary mathematical detail as possible. Because I have surveyed applied optics in a very general way (including much more than I would attempt to incorporate into any single college course), this book should be a useful handbook for the practicing physicist or engineer who works from time to time with optics. Any of the material is appropriate to an introductory undergraduate course in optics; the work as a whole will be useful to the graduate student or applied scientist with scant background in optics.

Modern Optics Simplified written by Robert D. Guenther and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-18 with Science categories.

This textbook reduces the complexity of the coverage of optics to allow a student with only elementary calculus to learn the principles of optics and the modern Fourier theory of diffraction and imaging. Students majoring in sciences or engineering and taking a standard physics course on optics will find this text useful. Examples of a variety of applications dependent on optics allow the student to connect this course to their particular field of interest. Topics covered include aberrations with experimental examples, correction of chromatic aberration, explanation of coherence and the use of interference theory to design an antireflection coating. Fourier transform optics and its application to diffraction and imaging, use of Gaussian wave theory, and fiber optics make the text of interest to those in electrical and bioengineering as well as physics and medical science. The text includes hundreds of photos, figures and diagrams to provide readers with strong visual insights into optics. More difficult, optional topics are highlighted throughout, and the need for experience with differential equations and extensive use of vector theory are avoided by using a one dimensional theory where possible. Maxwell's equations are introduced only to determine the properties of a light wave, and the boundary conditions are introduced to characterize reflection and refraction. Most discussion is limited to reflection. The book also introduces Fourier transforms as they are needed in the discussion of diffraction and imaging.

Introduction To Optical Components written by Roshan L. Aggarwal and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-05 with Technology & Engineering categories.

"This book provides a practical description of optics that satisfies the needs often encountered by some engineers in the practice of their profession. Optical components, including optical sources and detectors, have found their way into products that we buy for the house, and into industrial equipment. As a textbook, it provides an efficient tool for the student to gain in-depth knowledge of a subject, with homework problems to test and verify mastery of the subject." —Antonio Sanchez-Rubio, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Lexington, Massachusetts, USA "This book covers all the experimental tools, described meticulously and with clear illustrations, which students will need to perform their experiments. I wish I had this book when I taught an optics course!" —A.K. Ramdas, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA This book provides readers with a brief introduction to optical components. Materials presented in this book prepare readers to deal with optical components in the areas of optics and optical technology. Introduction to Optical Components features nine chapters with topics ranging from lenses (materials, magnifiers, and cameras); mirrors (spherical, ellipsoidal, and aberrations); diffraction gratings (holographic and multilayer dielectric); polarizers (birefringent, reflective, and Jones matrix algebra); windows (UV and AR coating materials); filters (neutral density and Raman); beamsplitters (plate, cube, and pellicle); sources (light-emitting diodes and lasers); and detectors (thermal, photon, and photodetector noise). This text also features a detailed discussion of non-ideal effects for practical components using minimal amounts of derivations (that do not compromise essential physical, mathematical, or material properties). While there are numerous books that feature "optical" in their title, to date, no textbook on optical components exists. It is for this reason that Introduction to Optical Components is such a vital resource. The technical level of this book is equivalent to an undergraduate course in the optics and optical technology curriculum. Students are required to have little familiarity with optics. Practitioners in optics and optical technology will also find this book useful. Each chapter includes numerous mathematical equations; tables providing useful optical parameters for many optical materials; and end-of-chapter questions and their corresponding solutions.

Optics And Lasers written by Matt Young and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-12 with Technology & Engineering categories.

In this newest edition of Optics and Lasers, I have added a substantial number of problems and moved most of the older ones to the end of the book. There are now about one hundred problems, which, I hope, will make the book more useful in the classroom. As before, some of the problems derive an espe cially important or useful result; these I have left integrated within the body of the book. In such cases, I state the result and, often, give it an equation number and a citation in the index. Teachers who adopt the book may obtain solutions to the problems by asking me for them on letterhead stationery. In addition, I have rewritten over a dozen paragraphs to improve their clarity or precision and, further , corrected minor errors of punctuation and taken care of other such small details. The field of optics has been changing greatly for almost two dozen years. Partly because of the applied or engineering nature of much of modern optics, there has been a need for a practical text that surveys the entire field. Such a book should not be a classical-optics text, but, rather , it should be strong on principles, applications and instrumentation, on lasers, holography and coherent light, and on optical-fiber waveguides. On the other hand, it should concern itself relatively little with such admittedly interesting phenomena as the formation of the rainbow or the precise determination of the speed of light.
