This book, adopting a systemic transdisciplinary perspective, explores the sociopsychological and the psychosocial interfaces shaping people's lived experiences of liminality. It is about life's outstandingly chaotic and confusing moments regularly recurring in or under calamitous circumstances, pervading our lives in the 21st century. Prospects for constructive change have traditionally been present in transformative liminal settings. The broad context of permanent liminality, however, is conducive to impasses in the process of change. The resulting liminal hotspots are characterized by a turmoil of negative feelings and increased suggestibility. In the book, discursive analyses underpin and illustrate the key points. Part I of the book serves as an introduction, exploring the mixed potential inherent languaging and symbol use in the social construction of transitions and liminal phenomena. Part II comprises sociopsychological analyses of the contexts – as labyrinths of meaning – of today’s globalized, a-mazed societies where economy, politics and info-communication technologies are closely intertwined to maintain trickster liminality. This part includes explorations on two distinct forms of manipulative discourse characteristic of authoritarian regimes, highlighting the role of double bind relations that permeate a despotic system to perpetuate unpredictability, chaos, and repeated entrapments in liminal hotspots. The author explores the discursive practices altering the traditional patterns of transformative liminality into the absurdity of permanent liminality with its (self)destructive power. Part III is about the psychosocial interface, focusing on the intersubjective domain of the individual's lived experiences, specifically on the phenomenological connections between rites of transition and psychosocial crises. Further, it comprises explorations on the prospects for transformative liminality inherent in dialogue. As a conclusion, humans' constructive potential must be coupled with care to benefit from transformations. Transitioning from one form-of-process into the subsequent one remains an intrinsic and mercurial event in human development. Let us embrace these moments – but embrace them with care. Euhemerism and Its Uses offers the first interdisciplinary, focussed, and all-round view of the long history of an important but understudied phenomenon in European intellectual and cultural history. Euhemerism – the claim that the Greek gods were historically mortal men and women – originated in the early third century BCE, in an enigmatic and now fragmentary text by the otherwise unknown author Euhemeros. This work, the Sacred Inscription, has been read variously as a theory of religion, an atheist’s manifesto, as justifying or satirizing ruler-worship, as a fantasy travel-narrative, and as an early ‘utopia’. Influencing Hellenistic and Roman literature and religious and political thought, and appropriated by early Christians to debunk polytheism while simultaneously justifying the continued study of classical literature, euhemerism was widespread in the middle ages and Renaissance, and its reverberations continue to be felt in modern myth-theory. In Theorizing Myth, Bruce Lincoln traces the way scholars and others have used the category of "myth" to fetishize or deride certain kinds of stories, usually those told by others. He begins by showing that mythos yielded to logos not as part of a (mythic) "Greek miracle," but as part of struggles over political, linguistic, and epistemological authority occasioned by expanded use of writing and the practice of Athenian democracy. Lincoln then turns his attention to the period when myth was recuperated as a privileged type of narrative, a process he locates in the political and cultural ferment of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Here, he connects renewed enthusiasm for myth to the nexus of Romanticism, nationalism, and Aryan triumphalism, particularly the quest for a language and set of stories on which nation-states could be founded. The contributors to this collection of essays on the literary use of myth in the early twentieth century and its literary and philosophical precedents from romanticism onwards draw on a range of disciplines, from anthropology, comparative literature, and literary criticism, to philosophy and religious studies. The underlying assumption is that modernist myth-making does not retreat from modernity, but projects a mode of being for the future which the past could serve to define. Modernist myth is not an attempted recovery of an archaic form of life so much as a sophisticated self-conscious equivalent. Far from seeking a return to an earlier romantic valorizing of myth, these essays show how the true interest of early twentieth-century myth-making lies in the consciousness, affirmative as well as tragic, of living in a human world which, in so far as it must embody value, can have no ultimate grounding. Although myth may initially appear to be the archaic counterterm to modernity, it is thus also the paradigm on which modernity has repeatedly reconstructed, or come to understand, its own life forms. The very term myth, by combining, in its modern usage, the rival meanings of a grounding narrative and a falsehood, encapsulates a central problem of modernity: how to live, given what we know.
