Traditionally, music and language have been treated as different psychological faculties. This duality is reflected in older theories about the lateralization of speech and music in that speech functions were thought to be localized on the left and music functions on the right hemisphere. But with the advent of modern brain imaging techniques and the improvement of neurophysiological measures to investigate brain functions an entirely new view on the neural and psychological underpinnings of music and speech has evolved. The main point of convergence in the findings of these new studies is that music and speech functions have many aspects in common and that several neural modules are similarly involved in speech and music. There is also emerging evidence that speech functions can benefit from music functions and vice versa. This new research field has accumulated a lot of new information and it is therefore timely to bring together the work of those researchers who have been most visible, productive, and inspiring in this field and to ask them to present their new work or provide a summary of their laboratory's work.

Songs have been present in peoples lives from the very beginning of humanity. They have been with us during religious ceremonies, in bars and in the shower. Songs have become an integral part of our language experience, and if used in coordination with a language lesson they can be of great value. The research, presented in this book considers a comparative study and analysis in the usage of song lyrics and the traditional more formal course book exercises in the teaching of Present Simple, Present Continuous and Past Simple tenses to year 7, 8 and 9 students. The aim of this book is to introduce the different methods of teaching English verb tenses, the use of song lyrics and music in the EFL classroom. It also focused on the reasons for using songs by demonstrating their effectiveness as a learning tool. The fact that grammar teaching may sometimes appear to be boring for certain students may make them rather unwilling to learn the grammar of a foreign language. In this situation, teachers should find some alternative, more motivating ways of teaching it.

Melodies, Rhythm and Cognition in Foreign Language Learning is a collection of essays reflecting on the relationship between language and music, two unique, innate human capacities. This book provides a clear explanation of the centrality of melodies and rhythm to foreign language learning acquisition. The interplay between language music brings to applied linguists inquiries into the nature and function of speech melodies, the role of prosody and the descriptions of rhythmical patterns in verbal behaviour. Musical students seem to be better equipped for language learning, although melodies and rhythm can benefit all types of students at any age. In fact, in this book melodies and rhythm are considered to be a springboard for the enhancement of the learning of foreign languages.

This book provides an in-depth look on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and Early Childhood Education (ECE), two domains where major joint research is needed. By taking stock on theoretical underpinnings, it explores the ideal conditions for early additional language acquisition in preschool contexts through CLIL with a learner-centered approach grounded in developmentally appropriate practices (DEP) and an emphasis on the importance of play, cognition, holistic content adaptation and social-emotional learning. The book also offers a comprehensive view of how this methodological approach has already set a clear path on Pre-primary education internationally. Finally, it offers insights into CLIL pedagogies as related and adapted to Pre-primary education, resources and materials for very young learners and practical implementation from the classroom. By providing a solid empirical background on Pre-primary CLIL, along with appropriate methodological issues and practices, this book serves as a key resource to students, practitioners, academics as well as teacher educators and policy-makers in international contexts.
