Although the term Artificial Intelligence (AI) was first used in the early19 50 ' s, its origin is referred back to 17th century when Pascal invented the first calculator. AI and its sub-fields were widely used in all scientific and industrial fields after the development of computer technology in the late 1980's. One of the sub-fields of AI, Expert Systems (ESs) has found a wide application area along with the development of computer technology.Ship design is very complex, based on expertise and iterative in nature. It alsorequires a wide dynamic knowledge base and database. Every year rules andregulations are updated, so are the knowledge base. Due to these complexcharacteristics of ship design, it is very suitable for an ES application. There are not many ES applications in ship design used in Turkey. The domain experts in-ship design and production industry in Turkey have been changing their jobs very often, as there are some very productive times followed by recessions. When they transfer between jobs, the domain knowledge is lost in the design office. If ESs in ship design are developed and introduced to the industry , expertise of the experts can be preserved even if they leave the environment. Thus, the dynamic knowledge base can be updated more easily. In this work, applicability of ESs to ship design is examined by reviewing thetopics including engineering design, ship design, AI, ESs, plant layout methods, and by developing a pilot application in ship design. Feeder type of container ship type was chosen for the application, because this type of ship is commonly built in Turkey.AI is a science that it is used to teach computers to think and decide likehuman beings. ESs are computer programs to solve a domain problem based on aknowledge base. There are several programming languages and shells available todevelop ESs. CLlPS shell was preferred for the application in this work. There are two basic inference methods in ESs. The first one is the forward chaining which uses facts to achieve the goal. The other one is the backward chaining which starts from a goal to achieve facts. This work aims to achieve a design solution starting from design requirements. Therefore the forward chaining method was found to be more suitable for the purpose. In this thesis, general design is examined and ship design techniques aresummarised, since this work establishes an ES application into ship design. Aknowledge based design system was developed and the knowledge was representedby production rules in the ES.An ES should be developed by collaborative work of a domain expert and aknowledge expert. The most important parameter in an ES is the knowledge base. One of the most difficult problems in the development of an ES, is to acquire the knowledge from experts. Interviewing is one of the techniques for knowledgeacquisition. A knowledge base is developed by interviewing the experts, using the reference books and the technical rules for container ship design.Several techniques have been developed for layout design and optimisation inarchitecture and industrial engineering. However, these techniques are not commonly used in ship design. Some plant layout techniques used in industrial engineering for factories and plants were examined and applied to general arrangement of accommodation spaces of ships.Interviews with ten experts were carried out and SOLAS (Safety Of Life AtSea), ILO (International Labour Organisation), SBG (See-Berufsgenossenschaft)rules were added to develop the knowledge base. The heuristic knowledge acquiredfrom experts and other technical knowledge are represented as rules. An ES program package called ALDES was developed consisting eight modules. Preliminary main dimensions of a container ship were calculated with formulas which were derived from a database of similar ships, the main transverse bulkheads were set and the general arrangement design was completed using ALDES. A living compartment was defined as an object with several attributes and the heuristic knowledge about the compartments were coded by using logic programming to generate living compartments in the package.ALDES was run to calculate the distance for evacuation in an emergency fordifferent scenarios. The effect of various compartment door locations to theevacuation distance were also examined. This work is hoped to be useful to design safer ships, especia11y the safety ofships and human lives after co11isions is the main concern nowadays. The AI and the ES have not been widely used in the Naval Architecture field. However, following this work, the application of ESs in ship building is strongly suggested since the knowledge base is so large and dynamic to handle.Considering the complex nature of ship design the study showed that underthe certain assumptions and constrains, a computer model can be developed by using Expert System.

The ever-growing demand for commercial activities at sea has meant that ships are rapidly developing and that the rules governing their construction and operation are changing. Practical Ship Design records these changes, their outcomes and the reasoning behind them. It deals with every aspect of ship design and handles a wide range of both merchant ships and naval ships with authority. It provides coverage of cargo ships and passenger ships, tugs, dredgers and other service craft. It also includes concept design, detail design, structural design, hydrodynamics design, the effect of regulations, the preparation of specifications and matters of costs and economics. Drawing on the author's extensive practical experience, Practical Ship Design is likely to interest everybody involved in the design, construction, repair and operation of ships. Students and the most experienced professionals will all benefit from the book's vast store of design data and its conclusions and recommendations.

Engineering, medicine, computer science, mathematics, and business all use applications of expert systems for problem solving that would normally require human skill. These expert systems solve varied problems with a similar procedure - so that knowledge of their use in other specialties will inevitably benefit yours. Expert Systems: Applications for Structural, Transportation, and Environmental Engineering provides a comprehensive, concise treatment of knowledge-based expert systems that introduces you to the flavor, concepts, and capacity of this powerful procedure. Expert Systems covers preliminary design of three-dimensional grids, design systems for low rise industrial buildings, preliminary design of frameworks, bridge design systems, and retaining wall design - especially the methodologies for these applications to structural design. The author presents design standards, typical expert systems for construction engineering and management applications, and the underlying concepts of expert systems, emphasizing bridge analysis, rating, and management. He describes the methodology and applications which aid the transportation and highway engineer in planning, design, and operation and addresses several applications in the fields of environmental and water resources engineering. Automation of the advice-giving of experts is used in design, process planning, manufacturing schedule, quality control, and diagnosis by a range of disciplines. Expert Systems increases your awareness of the versatility of expert systems in these disciplines and offers the theory and algorithms you need to use expert systems in design, maintenance, and construction.

Expert Systems for Engineering Design presents the application of expert system methods to a variety of engineering design problems. This book provides the technical details on how the methods are used to solve specific design problems in chemical engineering, civil engineering, and several others. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the synthesis, the creation, and development of alternative designs. This text then examines the nature of design expertise and the types of computer tools that can enhance the expert's decision-making. Other chapters consider the integration of tools into intelligent, cooperative frameworks. This book discusses as well the use of graphic interfaces with built-in knowledge about the designs being configured. The final chapter deals with the development of software tools for automatic design synthesis and evaluation within the integrated framework of a computer-aided mechanical design system known as CASE, which stands for computer-aided simultaneous engineering. This book is a valuable resource for engineers and architects.
