Investigation And Exploitation Of Snowfield Sites written by Malcolm Mellor and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1969 with Building, Ice and snow categories.

The document covers the site investigations and laboratoty tests in connection with construction on a permanent snowfield, and then deals with the technology of excavation and building where snow is almost the only constructional material. The author draws heavily on the work of the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in the development of Camp Century and other projects on the Greenland ice sheet and shows the application of the techniques to Antarctic Research Stations. The Freezing Process And Mechanics Of Frozen Ground written by Ronald F. Scott and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1969 with Frozen ground categories.

An outline is given two current theories on the freezing of water in soils. The classification and description, standardized in the United States and Canada, of frozen soils, leads to some laboratory data on the mechanical behavior of frozen soils. The monograph concludes with the application of linear viscoelastic theory to typical field problems. (Author).

Foundations And Subsurface Structures In Snow written by Malcolm Mellor and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1969 with Building, Ice and snow categories.

Various types of foundations suitable for use in very deep snow are described, and design principles are given. Dependence of settlement rate on heaving pressure, size and shape of foundation, snow temperature, and snow density is treated analytically, and field data from test procedures for foundation design are outlined. In treating the design of tunnels, shafts and subsurface structures in very deep snow, the distributions of stress, strain and displacement in polar ice sheets are first obtained analytically. Observed patterns of deformation are given for a variety of excavations and deformable structures, and methods of analysis are put forward. The loading of restraining structures is discussed, and finally some notes on the monitoring and maintenance of subsurface structures are given. (Author).

Snow, firn, and ice are the most widespread cryogenic minerals on Earth’s surface. Their properties differ significantly from those of common minerals, and their excavation requires special approaches. The problems of mining and construction in snow and ice could be explained mostly by harsh climate conditions, logistics difficulties, environmental issues and snow-ice related challenges. The primary objective of this book is to list all feasible technologies for mining and construction in snow and ice, and to analyze these from the perspective of applications, problems, and hindrances. Although mining and construction in snow and ice appears exotic, it is significantly common for the production of snow and ice as a source of freshwater and construction material; accessing subglacial ore; the investigation and sampling of near-surface layers; glacier geoengineering works; recovering of snow-buried objects; construction of subsurface shelters for living, working, and military facilities; observation and investigation of glacier beds; construction of sightseeing ice tunnels; and drainage of ice-dammed proglacial lakes.
