Excerpt from Utility Poultry-Keeping As its title denotes, this book is primarily intended for utility poultry-keepers, whether they look upon their fowls as a means of livelihood, or as a pleasant hobby only. I cannot lay claim to any special knowledge of exhibition poultry, and I have therefore made no attempt to deal with them other than to indicate such sane methods of culture as apply to all classes of stock. Indeed, there are so many standard works dealing either entirely or in part with "The Fancy," that any further matter seems superfluous. But I am hoping that this little work, unpretentious though it is, may be of some practical use to those who, like myself, believe that the possibilities of utility poultry-keeping in Great Britain are almost without limits. I have tried to steer clear of technicalities, so that the beginner may not be discouraged, and also, wherever possible, to give definite figures and methods of successful operations. I should like to make it clear, in regard to the position I have taken up with reference to "in-breeding" in Chapter I. and elsewhere in the book, that my strictures apply to the indiscriminate mating which is only too generally allowed in poultry on farms throughout the country, sternly as it would be repressed in the case of other stock. But this little book deals with another aspect of the case, giving full details of the American intensive system of poultry rearing, which is now on its trial in this country, in the h0pe that it may lead to a large increase in production. It seems to be generally agreed that - apart from the production of pedigree 'stock and the taking of pupils - poultry farming on the ordinary English lines does not pay when considerable sums have to be expended on food, and a large area devoted to its practice. It is of course a most valuable accessory industry, regarded as a means of utilising certain forms of waste, and is sufficiently remunerative on a small scale. The American system enables an enormous reduction to be made in the space required, and claims to reduce the cost of production so that satisfactory profits can be made even when large quantities of food have to be bought. The author has made a careful theoretical and practical study of the subject, and the numerous poultry-keepers who desire to test the intensive system will find this book a thoroughly practical guide. But even if American methods are proved to be suitable for Britain, success in their application cannot'be expected without co-n stant supervision, and strict attention to detail. J R. Excerpt from The Philo System of Progressive Poultry Keeping Our experience in poultry keeping dates back over a period of thirty-five years, and the mistakes made during that time, if fully stated, would fill a book much larger than this one. While many of our mistakes were expensive and discouraging, we were determined to win out, and as the failures came, we had the opportunity to study the causes, and again start frorn the foundation to overcome the difficulties. Many times the discoveries were surprising to us, as they will, no doubt, be to you, and were not put down as facts until each of them had been tested for at least five' years, and many of them much longer. We have learned that artificial heat supplied to chickens is not only unnecessary, but better poultry may be raised without it. The average ordinary heated wood brooder is too complicated and expensive, and there is too much danger of chilling, overheating or burning the chickens. When they come into this world they are supplied with an abundance of heat and all we have to do is to retain it. When green cut bone is fed liberally to breeding stock, good eggs from which to hatch strong chickens cannot be obtained, neither are the eggs likely to be fertile. The best two pound broilers can be raised when confined to a space of one square foot, when there are not too many in the flock. Pullets may be properly matured in a space of one and a half square feet, and a laying hen can be made to do her best when given three square feet of space. While it is generally understood that the largest egg yields from laying hens are obtained from the smallest flocks, the system has not been in general use. It is not uncommon to get six eggs from six hens in a flock, seven consecutive days. To get sixty eggs from sixty hens in a flock, one day in a year is hardly possible, and, as far as our knowledge goes, is not on record. Sixty hens properly bred and kept in ten colony coops should lay sixty eggs per day many days in the year, and at least twenty-five per cent. More eggs than the flock containing sixty hens; And if young chicks are to do their best, they must also be kept in small flocks. The biological solution is definite. The requisites named above must be met, and there is one addi tional factor to be taken into account: namely size of house. Experiments made at various times and places indicate clearly that in northern climates, where birds must be shut up in the house during a part, of the Year in order to give best results. There should be allowed in the house at least three square feet of floor space per bird and preferably a little more. Four square feet floor space per bird is a liberal allowance.
