Die Medientheologie ist als ein prekärer Anwendungsfall der Theologie des Rests zu verstehen. Es wird nach dem gefragt, was totalisierende Mediensysteme übergehen. “언어는 어떻게 우리의 생각을 만들고 처세와 정치를 결정하는가” 언어가 생각과 삶을 이루는 소재라면 우리는 의구심을 품고 끊임없이 질문해야 한다! 이민자 출신 독일의 대표 여성 언론인 퀴브라 귀뮈샤이의 언어와 존재, 더 나은 세계와 자유를 향한 빛나는 통찰 튀르키예인 외국인 노동자의 손녀로 태어나 무슬림이라는 정체성을 안고 독일 사회에 정착해 독일을 대표하는 여성 언론인으로 자리매김한 퀴브라 귀뮈샤이. 그녀는 우리 사회의 뜨거운 논제들, 그 안에 드리운 진짜 현실을 이해하기 위해서 언어의 체계를 살펴야 한다고 말한다. 우리의 하루 24시간은 잠 든 순간을 빼면 매 순간 언어로 이루어져 있다.『언어와 존재』는 느낌, 사고, 가치를 만들어내고 사회의 한 풍경을 이루는 언어의 건축 구조를 그녀 특유의 유려하고 은유적이며 자기고백적인 문장으로 파헤친 책이다. 언어와 인식 중 무엇이 먼저라고 생각하는기? 퀴브라 귀뮈샤이는 물 위에 비친 달빛을 뜻하는 튀르키예어 ‘야카모즈(yakamoz)’라는 단어를 알고 나서야 밤바다를 산책할 때 어둠 속에서 빛나는 달빛을 인식할 수 있었다. 이처럼 언어는 우리의 인식에 변화를 일으킨다. 우리가 그 단어를 알고 있기 때문에 그것이 무엇을 지칭하는지 인식할 수 있는 것이다. 어떤 언어를 쓰느냐에 따라 그 언어에 담긴 세계관을 흡수하고 언어가 만들어낸 풍경에 젖어든다. 그래서 언어는 우리에게 세계를 열어주는 동시에 우리를 그 안에 가둔다. 퀴브라 귀뮈샤이는 언어가 ‘한 개인’과 ‘사회’라는 존재의 집이자 우리의 생각과 삶을 이루는 소재라고 분명하게 밝힌다. 언어에 따라 우리의 생각은 가지를 치고 더 나아가 관점과 신념을 형성하며 처세와 정치까지 결정한다고 말이다. 오래전부터 쓰여 익숙해진 말, 효율과 기준을 내세운 꽤 그럴듯하게 들리는 표현, 권력과 주류 아래 조장되어온 언어 체계를 정확하게 인식하고, 항상 의구심을 품어야 하는 것은 이 때문이다. 누가 서술하고 누가 서술되는가? 범주화, 경계 짓기를 넘어 환대와 포옹으로 특히 퀴브라 귀뮈샤이는 언어와 정치적 비인간화의 상호관계에 주목했다. 누가 세상을 설명하는가? 누가 서술하고, 누가 서술되는가? 누가 이름을 붙이고, 누구에게 이름이 붙여지는가? 사람들은 이름 붙여지지 않은 자들에게 존재의 배경을 묻지 않는다. 자신들이 기준이고, 표준이고, 척도다. 특히 권력이, 발언권이 있는 쪽이 정해준 언어는 그렇지 못한 사람들의 관점과 개성을 지워버린다. 아프리카계 미국인 작가 제임스 볼드윈은 ‘검둥이 작가’로만 존재하지 않기 위해 태어난 곳을 떠나 자진 망명을 해야 했다. 영어는 볼드윈의 모국어였지만 그 언어 안에서 그는 굴욕감을 느끼고 존재의 일면을 제한당했다. 퀴브라 귀뮈샤이 역시 튀르키예 이민자 출신으로 독일에서 살아오면서 비슷한 경험을 숱하게 했다. 그녀는 독일어, 영어, 라틴어, 튀르키예어를 구사할 줄 알았지만 모국어인 튀르키예어는 어학 능력으로 인정받지 못했다. 학교는 이렇게 말했다. “여기에서는 튀르키예어를 사용하지 않아.” 사회는 이렇게 말했다. “불만이 있으면 네 나라로 가.” 그녀가 오랫동안 언어라는 주제에 열정적으로 천착해온 것은 자신이 겪은 것처럼 한 사회가 개인에게 가하는 부조리와 부당함을 알아차리고, 언어를 통해 정치적 비인간화가 공고해지는 것에 체념하지 않기 위해서였다. 『언어와 존재』는 그녀가 이런 현실 속에서도 더 많은 환대와 포옹을 지속적으로 요구해온 과정이 담겼다. 그녀의 글을 따라가다 보면 사회 구조에서 소외되고 있는 자들의 말에 귀 기울이는 것이 어째서 우리 모두의 당면 과제인지를 가늠해볼 수 있을 것이다. 말이 부서진 곳에서는 어떤 사물도, 어떤 인간도 존재할 수 없다 언어가 ‘무기’를 넘어서서 ‘도구’가 되기 위하여 ‘정치적으로 올바르지 못한’ 언어를 아주 대범하게 사용하는 사람들, 이들이 말을 통해 뱉는 고정관념은 주류가 아닌 사람들에게 무지의 갑옷이 되어 짐이 되고, 약하고 인간적인 순간에 이들을 굴복시킨다. 증오심에 불타오르는 이런 자들은 정치적 올바름이 아니라 정의에 저항하고 있으면서도 자신들을 보수주의자쯤으로 여긴다. 이들이 혐오의 대상에게 혐오를 표현하는 순간 인터넷에서 반향실을 발견하고, 되풀이되고, 극단화된다. 그리고 지속적인 여론으로 나타난다. 퀴브라 귀뮈샤이는 혐오는 그것이 어떤 형태든 무시되어서는 안 되며, 이를 용인해서도, 토론에서 새로운 자극제가 되는 ‘의견’으로 격상시켜서도 안 된다고 지적한다. 증오가 의견이 된 순간 말은 부서지고, 그 자리엔 어떤 사물도, 어떤 인간도 존재할 수 없기 때문이다. 그녀는 한 인간이 다른 인간에 의해 하나의 범주로 간주될 때, 얼마나 굴욕적이고 금치산 선고를 받은 것처럼 무기력한지 자신의 자전적 이야기를 털어놓으며, 차별과 소외가 범람하는 세계 속에서 우리가 어떻게 ‘다르게’ 말할 수 있는지, 어떻게 해야 더 ‘인간적’으로, 표준과 척도, 효율을 내세우지 않고 한 존재를 배제하지 않으면서 말할 수 있는지 살핀다. 특히 쿠르트 투홀스키의 말, “언어는 무기다”를 인용하며서 언어가 화자들이 의식하지 못한 사이에 무기가 될 수도 있지만 무기에 그치지 않고 도구가 될 수도 있다며 ‘도구로서의 말하기’를 강조한다. 누구나 자기 자신으로 존재하고, 말하고, 연결될 수 있는 세상을 위해 퀴브라 귀뮈샤이의 메시지는 “나로 존재하고, 말하고, 연결될 수 있는 세상”으로 축약해볼 수 있다. 그녀는 세상 자체는 정의롭지 않다는 사실을 인정해야 할지도 모른다고 말한다. 아직 우리는 모든 사람들의 인간다움이 실질적으로 인정받는 구조, 한 사람의 관점이 다른 사람에게 위협이 되지 않는 구조에서 살고 있지 않다. 다만 우리가 잊지 말아야 할 것은 우리 모두는 ‘인간’이라는 점이다. 우리는 실수를 하고, 상처를 주고받는다. 이것을 인정하고 이 겸허함을 바탕으로 서로에게 끊임없이 한 가지 입장만 강요하지 않고, 다른 사람들을 경직된 관점으로 구속하지 않을 때, 그리고 언어, 생각, 삶의 구조와 한계를 인식할 때 모든 사람들이 혈통, 인종, 신체, 종교, 성별, 성적 지향, 국적, 빈부 격차와 관계없이 자유롭게 말할 수 있게 될 것이다. 그런 후에야 우리 모두는 나 자신으로 존재할 수 있다. 복잡성 속에서 살아가는 우리 모두가 인간으로서 동등한 권리를 갖고, 말하고, 존재할 수 있는 방법, 모든 사람을 위한 공간이 마련된 ‘언어의 집’을 찾는 이 책은 고유하고 다양한 존재들의 실패와 연대의 기록인 동시에 다양성과 다의성, 환대를 지지하는 열정적인 연설문과 같은 책이다.
