This is the first book in English to survey the Eastern German literary trend of employing humor and satire to come to terms with experiences in the German Democratic Republic and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. As sophisticated attempts to make sense of socialism’s failure and a difficult unification process, these contemporary texts help define Germany today from a specific, Eastern German perspective. Grounded in politics and history, ten humorous and satirical novels are analyzed for their literary aesthetics and language, cultural critiques, and socio-political insights. The texts include popular novels such as Thomas Brussig’s Helden wie wir, Ingo Schulze’s Simple Storys, and Jens Sparschuh’s Der Zimmerspringbrunnen, as well as lesser-known but equally relevant works like Schlehweins Giraffe by Bernd Schirmer and Katerfrühstück by Erich Loest. A broad spectrum of humor and satire theories is applied to probe texts from various angles and suggest multi-layered answers to the question of how these literary modes function in postwall Germany to construct a specifically Eastern German identity. Interviews the author conducted with five of the satirists are appended as primary sources and contribute to the interpretation of the texts.

The book is provoked by the recent tragedy of Bosnia and the clash within a paradigmatic multicultural society. It offers theoretical responses both to the challenge of Bosnia and to the global challenge of how to reconcile two facts of the modern world and the threat that stems from this: the existence of 200 states, and their commitment to their own integrities, and the existence of 8000 ethnic groups and their devotion to keep their identities alive. The question the book raises is whether nation (state) and democracy are the proper and only answers to these challenges. Presenting conceptual controversies about two of the most discussed and disputed concepts of the present day, the author insists on totally new notions of nation and people (ethnic group, narod, folk). He maintains that ethnicity and nationality have hitherto been defined mainly in terms of culture and politics in anthropology and political science. Both concepts are however basically societal phenomena and therefore fall primarily within the subject domain of sociology. By combining a theoretical analysis with experience from Bosnia, the book provides definitions of concepts such as ethnic group and nation, and thereby ensures a new perspective and analytical tool for an international audience of academics and officials in international institutions and organizations. While the book is written in an academic style, it is nevertheless accessible to a broader audience: professors willing to test their own views and students keen to meet new approaches; academics eager to face new theoretical challenges and politicians ready to apply new emerging expertise; international practitioners capable of learning from life and local activists able to make up new theoretical responses to global issues.

This monograph presents a fresh and detailed treatment of the problems posed by the Nehemiah-Memoir. Starting from the pre-critical interpretations of Ezra-Neh, the study demonstrates that the use of the first-person does not suffice as a criterion for distinguishing between the verba Neemiae and the additions of later authors. The earliest edition of the Memoir isconfined to a building report, which was expanded as early generations of readers developed the implications of Nehemiah's accomplishments for the consolidation and centralization of Judah. The expansions occasioned in turn the composition of the history of the "Restoration" in Ezra-Neh.

This book discusses the historical record of the idea that language is associated with national identity, demonstrating that different applications of this idea have consistently produced certain types of results. Nationalist movements aimed at ‘unification’, based upon languages which vary greatly at the spoken level, e.g. German, Italian, Pan-Turkish and Arabic, have been associated with aggression, fascism and genocide, while those based upon relatively homogeneous spoken languages, e.g. Czech, Norwegian and Ukrainian, have resulted in national liberation and international stability. It is also shown that religion can be more important to national identity than language, but only for religious groups which were understood in premodern times to be national rather than universal or doctrinal, e.g. Jews, Armenians, Maronites, Serbs, Dutch and English; this is demonstrated with discussions of the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide, the civil war in Lebanon and the breakup of Yugoslavia, the United Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
