Durante la última década, ha habido un considerable progreso en la modelación de sistemas de producción agrícola. Modelos que predicen no solamente la dinámica de crecimiento sino también el rendimiento final han sido desarrollados para una amplia gama de cultivos tales como: maíz, algodón, sorgo, trigo, soya, alfalfa y otros. Investigadores han estado recientemente aplicando estos modelos para estudiar varios de los problemas que se presentan dentro de los sistemas productivos, ubicándose principalmente en las siguientes áreas: manejo del riego, programación de la cosecha, manejo de pesticidas, planeación y uso de la tierra, cultivos múltiples y predicción de rendimientos. Este desarrollo ha demostrado concluyentemente el valor de esta metodología. El objetivo del presente trabajo consistió en validar la habilidad del modelo Ceres-Maize, el cual es un modelo lo suficientemente sofisticado a ser sensitivo a las interacciones de los principales procesos de desarrollo del cultivo del maíz con su medio ambiente, para estimar las fluctuaciones de la producción en respuesta a las variaciones atmosféricas diarias presentadas a cultivos de maíz sembrados en cinco fechas diferentes, durante el ciclo verano-invierno 1990, en Campo Agrícola Experimental del ITESM Campus Monterrey, en Apodaca, N.L.
