La historiografía española acepta desde hace relativamente poco tiempo, y a menudo por influencia de la historiografía europea, que la epidemia de Peste Negra de 1348 afectó gravemente a toda la Península, pese a la escasez y parquedad de las fuentes existentes, sobre todo en la Corona de Castilla. La aceptación de muy graves pérdidas de población como consecuencia de la epidemia choca, además, con la falta de coherencia entre las cifras que se difunden y la previsible evolución de una población de régimen antiguo, en las condiciones establecidas por la Demografía Histórica, con la gravedad y persistencia de los conflictos bélicos coetáneos, con la revolución fiscal que incrementa muy considerablemente los ingresos de las monarquías hispánicas y con los datos que la investigación sobre la evolución y la coyuntura económica se van conociendo. Al punto de que no es posible aceptar cifras globales de mortalidad tan elevadas como las que se han venido manejando.

Es tracten en aquest llibre qüestions medul·lars sobre la primera transició del feudalisme al capitalisme. L'anàlisi se centra en Castella, entre el 1250 i el 1520, encara que estén la mirada a altres àrees europees. Quatre són els nuclis temàtics: l'evolució sociopolítica que va conduir a l'Estat feudal, la gènesi de la producció rural capitalista, la lluita de classes i la relació d'aquests factors amb el flux comercial entre regions. En cada un d'ells, es troben interpretacions rebudes. Les dels clàssics, Marx i Weber, en primer lloc, continuant per la polèmica Dobb-Sweezy del començament dels anys 1950, el debat Brenner de 1970-1980 sobre demografia i classes socials, l'escola anglesa d'historiadors marxistes, la sociologia històrica d'Anderson, els models de Braudel i Wallerstein sobre l'economia món, finalitzant amb el neoclàssic home de mercat de final del mil·lenni. L'estudi de cas es combina necessàriament, doncs, amb l'estudi de l'erència teòrica; és el pas imprescindible per a accedir a noves interpretacions. La figura de Marx sobrevola en aquest llibre i proveeix el seu nucli metòdic. Però aquest seguiment està desproveït de qualsevol devoció ortodoxa. L'estudi documental imposa revisar les seues interpretacions sobre l'Estat absolutista, la vigència temporal de la llei del valor i els orígens capitalistes.
