Collis and Lyons (Simon Fraser University, Canada) enlist US and a few international contributors in English, American studies, and poetry to probe the poetry of Robert Duncan. Part 1 traces a variety of Duncan's influences and derivations. Some topics include textual poetics and the politics of reading in Duncan's "Night Scenes," and poetic abdication in Duncan and Laura Riding. Part 2 examines poets who in some way derive from Duncan, with discussion of quotation in the poetry of Duncan and Ronald Johnson, Jerome Rothenberg and the dream of "A Poetry of All Poetries," and anarchism and the practice of derivative poetics in Duncan and John Cage. This Compost written by Jed Rasula and has been published by University of Georgia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Poetry, for Jed Rasula, bears traces of our entanglement with our surroundings, and these traces define a collective voice in modern poetry independent of the more specific influences and backgrounds of the poets themselves. In This Compost Rasula surveys both the convictions asserted by American poets and the poetics they develop in their craft, all with an eye toward an emerging ecological worldview. Rasula begins by examining poets associated with Black Mountain College in the 1950s—Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, and Robert Duncan—and their successors. But This Compost extends to include earlier poets like Robinson Jeffers, Ezra Pound, Louis Zukofsky, Kenneth Rexroth, and Muriel Rukeyser, as well as Clayton Eshleman, Gary Snyder, Michael McClure, and other contemporary poets. Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson also make appearances. Rasula draws this diverse group of poets together, uncovering how the past is a "compost" fertilizing the present. He looks at the heritage of ancient lore and the legacy of modern history and colonial violence as factors contributing to ecological imperatives in modern poetry. This Compost restores the dialogue between poetic language and the geophysical, biological realm of nature that so much postmodern discourse has sought to silence. It is a fully developed, carefully argued book that deals with an underrepresented element in modern American culture, where the natural world and those who write about it have been greatly neglected in contemporary literary history and theory.

Poe Evermore written by David Huckvale and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-02 with Literary Criticism categories.

Edgar Allan Poe exerted a profound influence on many aspects of 20th century culture, and continues to inspire composers, filmmakers, writers and artists. Popularly thought of as a "horror" writer, Poe was also a philosophical aesthete, a satirist, a hoaxer, a psychologist and a prophet of the anxieties and preoccupations of the modern world. Alphabetically arranged, this book explores Poe's major works both in their own right and in terms of their impact on others, including Baudelaire, who translated his works into French; Debussy, Rachmaninoff and the Alan Parsons' Project, who set them to music; Roger Corman, Federico Fellini and Jean Epstein, who interpreted his visions for film audiences; and television shows such as The Six Million Dollar Man and Time Tunnel, which borrowed his imagery (and, in the case of The Simpsons, sent it up). A wide range of other responses to his compelling Tales of Mystery and Imagination, his poetry and the theoretical writings, combine strongly to suggest that Poe's legacy will indeed last forevermore.

Using a critical examination of the collage poetics of Ronald Johnson, this book sets out to understand Johnson's poetry in the context of the "New American" collage tradition, stretching from Ezra Pound to Louis Zukofsky and beyond. Additionally, the book assesses Johnson's work in relation to wider questions concerning literary chronologies, especially the discontinuities commonly seen to exist between nineteenth-century Romantic and twentieth-century modernist literary forms.

Poetry. A new edition of Ronald Johnson's masterpiece, edited by Peter O'Leary. "ARK is a metaphysical poem that could only have been written in our time, of which it displays a new vision. It is a late harvest of seeds sown by Blake, L. Frank Baum, the Bible, and Zukofsky, all in a new architecture, a wholly new voice, and even a new chemistry of words and images. It is for those who can see visions, and for those who know how to look well and be taught that they can see them."—Guy Davenport
