Kamal Abdulla is a well-known Azerbaijani writer and scholar. He has written works on linguistics, culturology and mythology, and is the author of poetry, essays, plays, stories, and novels. His prose has been published and translated into French, Turkish, Russian, English, Portuguese, German, Polish, Bulgarian, Georgian, Arabic, Lithuanian, Japanese, and other languages. His plays have been performed in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Estonia. His work is not without its detractors. Many articles and books have been written about his work, some positive, some negative. He has won literary awards in his own country, and been subject to unfair criticism. In the early years of Azerbaijan's independence, liking his novels was considered a sign of good literary taste. In later years, not liking these works is considered a sign of good literary taste. Original language, world view, philosophical foundation, and mythological sense characterize his work. His writing features mountains invisible to the eye, and valleys of sorcerers where it is forever spring. Here ancient manuscripts come to life and history is re-read in a completely different way. Centaurs roam his favourite city, Baku, while in ancient Egypt, people turn into flowers, and flowers into people. The idolized heroes of his mythological texts are fleshed out as ordinary, everyday people. Sometimes dead people emerge from their images, restore justice, and then return to their images. Not satisfied with living in their own worlds, characters lead very different lives in parallel worlds. The story of Theseus and the Minotaur enters our own time, and finally the phantasmagoria reaches such a point that Paris gives the apple to Hera, not Aphrodite...

Ferrian has been running his whole life. Running, because he has no choice. Wherever he goes, Winter follows. Wherever he sleeps, frost creeps at his door. From town to town he hastens, frightened, tired; forever trying to keep one step ahead of the cold, the snow and the devastating storms. It is a kind of curse, and Ferrian has no idea what it means. Only someone with a knowledge of magic might be able to to help him, but sorcerers are nearly extinct in the world. Two brothers remain, however; the last of their once-noble kind, holed up in a secluded valley, waging their own private and very personal war. Ferrian, captured by the local law enforcers, finds himself unexpectedly amongst friends sympathetic to his cause, and together they set out on an adventure-filled quest to find the last sorcerers. What is the Winter? Can it be controlled, or is it really a curse? And how many people -- friends, enemies, innocent countryfolk -- will fall victim to the strange magical storm before Ferrian learns the answers?

Oceanic Encounters written by Margaret Jolly and has been published by ANU E Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-07-01 with History categories.

This volume, the result of ongoing collaborations between Australian and French anthropologists, historians and linguists, explores encounters between Pacific peoples and foreigners during the longue durée of European exploration, colonisation and settlement from the sixteenth century to the twentieth century. It deploys the concept of `encounter¿ rather than the more common idea of `first contact¿ for several reasons. Encounters with Europeans occurred in the context of extensive prior encounters and exchanges between Pacific peoples, manifest in the distribution of languages and objects and in patterns of human settlement and movement. The concept of encounter highlights the mutuality in such meetings of bodies and minds, whereby preconceptions from both sides were brought into confrontation, dialogue, mutual influence and ultimately mutual transformation. It stresses not so much prior visions of `strangers¿ or `others¿ but the contingencies in events of encounter and how senses other than vision were crucial in shaping reciprocal appraisals. But a stress on mutual meanings and interdependent agencies in such cross-cultural encounters should not occlude the tumultuous misunderstandings, political contests and extreme violence which also characterised Indigenous-European interactions over this period.

Women And Mediation In Indonesia written by S.T. van Bemmelen and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-06 with Social Science categories.

This volume is the product of an international workshop on Women and Mediation, organized in Leiden in 1988 by the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde (KITLV) and the Werkgroep Indonesische Vrouwenstudies (WIVS), a Dutch interdisciplinary study group on Indonesian women. The book contains a selection of fourteen contributions—sociological, anthropological, and historical—ranging geographically ‘from Sabang to Merauke’ from the Toba Batak (North Sumatra) to the Dani (Irian Jaya). Loosely centred around the concept of mediation, many of the articles include new data derived from archival research and fieldwork. One cluster of articles concentrates on theoretical questions concerning the concept of mediation. Another cluster deals with brokerage in the economic and social fields. A third cluster focuses on mediation in the cultural domain, which many extend to mediation between different ‘cultures’(elite-agrarian, Western-Indonesian) or between the human and the suprahuman world, between macrocosm and microcosm. Mediation by women has been overlooked not only in the social sciences in general but also in the field of women studies in particular. The present volume explores the theme of mediation by women in general, and in Indonesia in particular.
