En los últimos años los problemas forestales han adquirido cada vez mayor importancia en las agendas internacionales. Este interés refleja la creciente preocupación sobre el destino de los ecosistemas forestales y la posible pérdida de los beneficios que éstos proporcionan. En el intento de alcanzar una ordenación forestal sostenible, hay una creciente demanda por metodologías prácticas y exhaustivas de valoración, que presenten claramente la contribución de los bosques y que sean fácilmente comprensibles para los tomadores de decisiones. Esta técnicas deberían, en forma apropiada, estimar el valor forestal concerniente a sus funciones ambientales, sociales y productivas y calcular el valor de los bienes y servicios madereros y no madereros. Este documento examina enfoques que pueden superar las limitaciones de los análisis convencionales y representa un marco de referencia para ayudar a aclarar lo que puede o no puede ser hecho en el ámbito de la valoración forestal. No se trata de un manual de técnicas de evaluación, pero mediante el análisis de los diversos métodos de valoración, permite seleccionar las metodologías más apropiadas e informa a los lectores acerca de otros documentos que proporcionan mayores detalles técnicos sobre el tema.

Forests and trees support sustainable agriculture. They stabilize soils and climate, regulate water flows, give shade and shelter, and provide a habitat for pollinators and the natural predators of agricultural pests. They also contribute to the food security of undreds of millions of people, for whom they are important sources of food, energy and income. Yet, agriculture remains the major driver of deforestation globally, and agricultural, forestry and land policies are often at odds. State of the World's Forests (SOFO) 2016 shows that it is possible to increase agricultural productivity and food security while halting or even reversing deforestation, highlighting the successful efforts of Costa Rica, Chile, the Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Tunisia and Viet Nam. Integrated land-use planning is the key to balancing land uses, underpinned by the right policy instruments to promote both sustainable forests and agriculture.
