La investigación doctoral que propongo bajo el título Teoría y crítica de la novela existencialista posee como principal objetivo el estudio de las relaciones existentes entre el pensamiento filosófico y el discurso literario a partir del análisis pormenorizado de las novelas más representativas de la narrativa existencial. Este objetivo asume asimismo la necesidad de un estudio comparatista que trascienda la novelística francesa de Sartre y Camus para su confrontación con otras obras de diversas culturas también cercanas al ámbito existencialista. La necesidad de llevar a cabo la investigación propuesta hunde su raíz, a su vez, en un objetivo epistemológico de naturaleza intrínseca al ámbito de la Teoría de la Literatura. A lo largo del siglo XX la Teoría de la Literatura ha cimentado su estatuto crítico en el análisis formal del signo lingüístico. Gracias a esta focalización analítica el ámbito crítico ha progresado en rigor y objetividad. Sin embargo, hay una serie de asuntos también convocados por el signo lingüístico que han sido soslayados o al menos desatendidos en beneficio del desarrollo de las investigaciones en torno a la inmanencia sígnica. A partir de una crítica que asume los logros de la poética estructural como la teoría global de los profesores Antonio García Berrio y Francisco Chico Rico, un objetivo básico de mi investigación será la profundización en el polo semántico y pragmático que une la literatura a la filosofía en el caso de la novela existencialista. Por otra parte, la relación entre la literatura y la filosofía, además de su potencialidad cognoscitiva y artística, establece un campo de análisis que ya de por sí es propio del ámbito de la Teoría literaria y de la Literatura Comparada, ya que no sólo es comparatismo la equiparación de fenómenos literarios. Por último, el tercer objetivo que convoca mi investigación doctoral tiene que ver con los aspectos cognoscitivos de carácter filosófico que la literatura puede alcanzar mediante la construcción de narraciones ficcionales. Desde este punto de vista, mi trabajo trata de aproximar ambos discursos para analizar la extensión literaria hasta el terreno de los descubrimientos filosóficos de cariz existencial, al tiempo que aborda la filosofía existencialista en su utilización literaria de la escritura narrativa.

Latin America and Existentialism is a preliminary intellectual history, prioritising literature and contextualising Latin American philosophical contributions from the 1860s to the late 1930s, decades that coincide with the canon’s foundational years. This study takes a Pan-American approach to move the critical focus away from the River Plate, a region that has received some critical attention. In doing so, it focuses on existentially-neglected writers such as Brazil’s Machado de Assis and Graciliano Ramos, José Asunción Silva from Colombia, Cuba’s Enrique Labrador Ruiz, and the Chilean María Luisa Bombal. Underappreciated Latin American philosophical voices and existentialism’s canonical perspectives allow the author to discuss the many problems concerning the experiencing ‘I’ of these authors, and to consider such existential themes as ethical vacuity, forlornness, the crisis of insufficiency, the conundrum of choice, and the enigma of authentic being. The concentration on Latin America’s existentially-hued interest in the human condition is an invitation to the reader to reconsider the peripheral status in the existentialism canon.
