Supply chain management helped companies to manage volumes, fulfil customer demand and optimize costs in production and distribution. Specifically, chemical industry companies with high complexity in production and distribution used supply chain management to steer their operations. Confronted with globalization and increasing raw material and sales price volatility, optimizing supply chain costs is no longer sufficient to ensure the overall profitability of the business. Value chain management takes supply chain management to the next level by integrating all volume and value decisions from sales to procurement. The book presents the value chain management concept and demonstrates how it is applied in a global value chain planning model for commodities in the chemical industry. A comprehensive industry case study illustrates the effects of decision making integration, e.g. the influence of raw material prices or exchange rates on optimal sales, production, distribution and procurement plans as well as overall company profitability.

Almost every organization is exposed to financial risk stemming from commodity price volatility. Risk exposure may be direct, from the prices paid for raw materials transformed into products sold to customers, or indirect, from higher energy and transportation costs. The purpose of this book is to provide a range of approaches that organizations can implement and adapt for managing commodity price volatility and reducing their exposure to the financial risks associated with purchased goods and services. This topic is important for supply chain and finance professionals owing to the significant direct financial effects price volatility has on profitability, organizational cash flow, the ability to competitively price products, new product design, buyer-supplier relationships, and the negotiation process. Flexibility, a key competitive capability for managing supply chains, is likewise essential for managing commodity price risk. This book, which contains new content and updated examples relative to our first edition, provides supply chain managers a way to assess their organization's exposure to price risk. Based on the extent of risk and their organizations' risk appetites, supply chain and finance managers can choose from a range of options for effectively managing commodity price risk from direct commodity purchases, as well as exposure to risk from value chain purchases. The book will help supply chain and finance managers to develop and implement effective short- and long-term forecasts and to select the most appropriate risk management strategies for their organizations. Further, the decisions, actions, and policies taken today can significantly affect the options available for managing commodity price risk in the future. The viability and effectiveness of the overall risk management process and respective techniques are discussed, predominately from the buying-firm's perspective.

Food Supply Chain Management: Economic, Social and Environmental Perspectives is very different from parts supply chain management as can be seen from the increasing health, safety and environmental concerns that are increasingly garnering the public’s attention about different food supply chain problems. Food supply chain managers face very different environments. For example, there are very specific regulations from government bodies such as FDA or US Department of Agriculture, commodity subsidy programs, ever-changing trade policies, or increasing trends with intense public interest such as sustainability or bioengineering. While the popular press has written extensively about certain food supply chain issues, these books focus on health effects, specific supply chain practices (buy local vs. commodity supply chain), agricultural policy impacts, and problems in the modern food supply chain. Food Supply Chain Management covers the food supply chain comprehensively, and is appropriate for a business student audience and students in agriculture business, natural resources and food science.

Agricultural Supply Chains And The Challenge Of Price Risk written by John Williams and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-04 with Business & Economics categories.

This book discusses the issues of integration within food and fibre supply chains and the challenges in managing price risk. The problems of integration and price risk are interwoven in agricultural supply chains with production and supply risk as well as hoarding. However, without supply chain integration through commercial trade markets there can be no forward market upon which forward transactions and the management of price risk can be based. Without a forward market that can reduce opportunistic behaviour, there is likely to be little security of supply, particularly under high production risk and price uncertainty. Whilst price risk management is possible under certain circumstances, there are many factors that can prevent the development of forward markets or cause them to collapse, thus undermining the ability to manage price risk within acceptable risk and return parameters. Market positions therefore need to be valued and often settled daily due to the risk of contract default. In addition, the issue of currency risk and its management applies to international market positions and transactional exposures. The book analyses a range of price risk management strategies from forward contracting through to futures and options hedging, and finally to over-the-counter products. Evaluation techniques are developed to aid decision-making. The author concludes that forward market development may be the exception rather than the norm, and that whilst favourable price risk management outcomes may be possible, they can sometimes be caused more by luck than through good management. It is shown how tactics are an important consideration in decision-making to minimize costs and losses.

The aim of this study is to present the emerging trends in managing health Supply Chain Management and health commodity management. Logistics and Supply Chain modernism are becoming a highly newsworthy issue in the research agenda in developing countries, as well as in practice. The intention is that economic and political factors are raising the attention to healthcare issues: the process of local health corporatization, which involves the introduction into the Health Commodity Management System. In the increasing demand for healthcare services and availability of health commodities to augment quality health service delivery. Emerging technologies and modernized systems will continue to drive up the total healthcare in a responsive manner. Indeed, limited resources and a sturdy growth in spending, hence, the need of a public and private health rationalization, especially for meeting increasingly quality demands of goods and service. All this requires a reflective alteration that affects not only the processes of diagnosis and treatment, but also those of support, especially logistics, which is essential for the processes of service quality and improvement in commodity security. Commodity security exists when clients can obtain and use essential health commodities when and where they need them. This concept is an extension of frameworks that were developed for family planning and reproductive health commodities and later for HIV/AIDS commodities. It is in this concept that health commodity security is also at the center of the World Health Organizations' (WHO) essential medicines strategy.
