Humans clearly prioritise themselves over animals1. This shows in many different domains, across all cultures, and throughout history. Most conspicuously, humans kill and eat animals on a massive scale. Similarly, humans use some animals as experimental subjects to benefit humans. Yet other animals are kept as sources of entertainment or used as industrial equipment, or they are considered pests. Our legal system views even our closest non-human relatives, chimpanzees, as property and denies them basic rights such as the right to bodily integrity. I call this general phenomenon of morally valuing humans more than animals moral anthropocentrism. Moral anthropocentrism appears to be a strong and universal human tendency (Petrinovich, O'neill, & Jorgensen, 1993). In this thesis, I will investigate it psychologically. In particular, I will focus on the speciesism hypothesis: the hypothesis that people value humans more than animals because of their mere species-membership.

The Intrinsic Value Of Nature written by Leena Vilkka and has been published by Rodopi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Philosophy categories.

What is intrinsic value? What is the origin of value? Are people always superior to nature? This book is a philosophical analysis of the human relationship to the non-human world. It is a pioneering study of the philosophy of nature-conservation in relation to the discussion of intrinsic value. Vilkka develops a naturalistic or naturocentric theory of value that is based on ethical extensionism and pluralism. Vilkka analyzes natural values and environmental attitudes: zoocentrism, biocentrism, and ecocentrism. This book forms a taxonomy for nature having intrinsic value. The theory of intrinsic value is based on naturocentric and naturogenic values. The book questions the thesis of weak anthropocentrism that denies the existence of naturogenic values. In Vilkka's theory, animals and nature are the origin of value. She defends the existence of zoogenic and biogenic values in the non-human world and discusses the possibility of ecogenic value, nature as a whole having value independent of human or animal minds. Vilkka analyzes the goodness and rights of nature, the problem of priorities, and ecological humanism. A naturocentric recommendation is that the well-being of animals and nature should have priority over human values at least in some real decision contexts. Ecological humanism recommends an attitude of respect for people, animals, and nature. The book includes an extensive glossary, index, and bibliography.

This article examines the current tort doctrine that values companion animals only at fair market value, which is minimal for most pets. The author argues that this rule severely undercompensates most plaintiffs whose companion animals are destroyed through another's negligent or intentional act. Pet owners typically keep companion animals for relational, not economic, purposes. As a result, the formulation for tort damages should reflect the true worth of these creatures in our lives. The author proposes a damages scheme for plaintiffs under which they could recover the replacement cost of their deceased companion animal plus a limited amount of damages for emotional distress and lost society.

Many deep concerns in the life sciences and medicine have to do with the enactment, ordering and displacement of a broad range of values. This volume articulates a pragmatist stance for the study of the making of values in society, exploring various sites within life sciences and medicine and asking how values are at play. This means taking seriously the work scientists, regulators, analysts, professionals and publics regularly do, in order to define what counts as proper conduct in science and health care, what is economically valuable, and what is known and worth knowing. A number of analytical and methodological means to investigate these concerns are presented. The editors introduce a way to indicate an empirically oriented research program into the enacting, ordering and displacing of values. They argue that a research programme of this kind, makes it possible to move orthogonally to the question of what values are, and thus ask how they are constituted. This rectifies some central problems that arise with approaches that depend on stabilized understandings of value. At the heart of it, such a research programme encourages the examination of how and with what means certain things come to count as valuable and desirable, how registers of value are ordered as well as displaced. It further encourages a sense that these matters could be, and sometimes simultaneously are, otherwise.
