A study of the values and the valuing processes of five female and five male white Americans, ranging in age from 27 to 54, shows that feelings are integral to value development. All participants explain the development of their values en masse as evolutionary in upward and broadening directions, with concomitant movement along various polarities (e.g., external to internal; form to substance; physical to metaphysical). In everyday experiencing, the participants initially repressed feelings. Gradually they incorporated feelings into their daily processes, and they now describe feelings as often inseparable from thinking. Feeling criteria (e.g., feels good, feels wrong) have emerged which the participants use to gauge satisfaction with their values. the participants feel impelled to reconsider values which fail to meet these criteria. Feelings influence the participants' values and their meanings, the participants' appraisal and appreciation of their values, and their valuing processes. Some participants experience a painful conflict between values and a feeling of love, a condition which other participants avoid through the recognition that feelings can also be values. the participants' experiences indicate that feelings are integral elements of both values and valuing, and that in some instances feelings may act as values and affective processing may at times be a valuing process. the ideas of several theorists support the findings, which are best understood within a philosophical and historical context. the discussion considers implications in terms of a science of values, human development, and epistemological concerns.
