Im Jahre 429 n.Chr. besetzten die Vandalen die nordafrikanischen Provinzen des Romischen Reiches und begrundeten fur gut ein Jahrhundert ein Konigreich. Hervorstechendste Begleiterscheinung ihrer Herrschaft war die massive Auseinandersetzung zwischen dem arianischen Glauben, den die vandalischen Konige beforderten, und dem Katholizismus der provinzialromischen Bevolkerung. Hauptquelle fur diese Ereignisse ist die Historia Persecutionis Africanae Provinciae des Victor von Vita. Darstellungsmuster und Argumentationsstrukturen der Historia werden im Spannungsfeld zwischen Barbarentopik und Haresiologie eingehend untersucht. Im Mittelpunkt steht die selbstbewuate Religionspolitik der vandalischen Konige, die sich entgegen der Darstellung Victors als durchaus erfolgreich erweist. Der innertextliche Untersuchungsansatz legt auch offen, daa die ethnischen Identitaten mit den konfessionellen weit weniger ubereinstimmten, als Victor dies in seiner Darstellung nahezulegen sucht. Voraussetzung fur diese Ergebnisse ist eine revidierte Deutung der zeitgleich mit Victors Werk entstandenen Notitia Provinciarum, einer afrikanischen Bischofsliste. Die Arbeit schlieat mit einer neuen Gesamtdeutung von Victors Werk.

This book studies the complex attitude of late ancient Christians towards classical education. In recent years, the different theoretical positions that can be found among the Church Fathers have received particular attention: their statements ranged from enthusiastic assimilation to outright rejection, the latter sometimes masking implicit adoption. Shifting attention away from such explicit statements, this volume focuses on a series of lesser-known texts in order to study the impact of specific literary and social contexts on late ancient educational views and practices. By moving attention from statements to strategies this volume wishes to enrich our understanding of the creative engagement with classical ideals of education. The multi-faceted approach adopted here illuminates the close connection between specific educational purposes on the one hand, and the possibilities and limitations offered by specific genres and contexts on the other. Instead of seeing attitudes towards education in late antique texts as applications of theoretical positions, it reads them as complex negotiations between authorial intent, the limitations of genre, and the context of performance.

Die Autoren gehen der Frage nach, welche Rolle in den verschiedenen regna des Frühmittelalters fortbestehende Grundbedingungen spielten. Die Städte, Familien und verschiedenste politische Gruppen lassen sich als Träger des Imperium Romanum ausmachen. Diese Akteure sind kommunikativ miteinander und mit dem Kaiserhaus vernetzt. An diesem Prinzip hat sich auch im westlichen Frühmittelalter nichts geändert. Zwar sind die Akteure nicht mehr dieselben wie etwa vor dem Prozess der Christianisierung. Aber nach wie vor bestehen die politischen Räume des ehemaligen römischen Reiches im Westen aus politischen Basisgrößen, allen voran immer noch die Städte, die auch im frühen Mittelalter als Kleinstaaten aufzufassen sind. Zukünftige Forschung wird daher intensiver auch den politischen Kleinräumen und der Bedeutung lateinischer Kommunikation nachgehen müssen.

As the Roman Empire in the west crumbled over the course of the fifth century, new polities, ruled by 'barbarian' elites, arose in Gaul, Hispania, Italy, and Africa. This political order occurred in tandem with growing fissures within Christianity, as the faithful divided over two doctrines, Nicene and Homoian, that were a legacy of the fourth-century controversy over the nature of the Trinity. In this book, Marta Szada offers a new perspective on early medieval Christianity by exploring how interplays between religious diversity and politics shaped post-Roman Europe. Interrogating the ecclesiastical competition between Nicene and Homoian factions, she provides a nuanced interpretation of religious dissent and the actions of Christians in successor kingdoms as they manifested themselves in politics and social practices.
