वंदे मातरम राष्ट्रगान वंदे मातरम् आरंभ से ही विवाद के केंद्र में है। इसकी रचना, लोकप्रियता और विवाद तीनों का इतिहास एक ही है। इतिहासकार और समाजशास्त्री सब्यसाची भट्टाचार्य ने वंदे मातरम् पुस्तक में इसी इतिहास-कथा को सिलसिलेवार और सप्रमाण बतलाने का सार्थक यत्न किया है। बंकिमचंद्र चट्टोपाध्याय ने सन् 1870 के दशक के शुरुआती वर्षों में इसे वंदना-गीत के रूप में रचा। 1881 में इसे उपन्यास आनंदमठ में शामिल किया गया। कथा-संदर्भ के भीतर इस गीत ने विस्तृत रूपाकार में हिन्दू-युद्धघोष का रूप धारण कर लिया। सन् 1905 में बंगाल के आंदोलन ने इस गीत को राजनीतिक नारे में तब्दील कर दिया। कहा जाता है कि जवाहरलाल नेहरू ने कांग्रेस के राष्ट्रीय अधिवेशन में इसे पहली बार गाया। 1920 तक विभिन्न भारतीय भाषाओं में अनूदित होकर यह राष्ट्रीय हैसियत पा चुका था। 1930 में गीत के बिंब-विधान, व्यंजना और बुतपरस्ती को लेकर व्यापक विरोध हुआ। सन् 1937 में गीत के उन अंशों को छाँट दिया गया, जिनको लेकर आपत्तियाँ थीं तथा शेषांश को राष्ट्रगान के रूप में अपना लिया गया। विभिन्न समय और संदर्भों में गीत के ‘पाठ’ और ‘पाठक’ के बीच जारी संवाद में निरंतरता और परिवर्तन को जानना इस पुस्तक का सबसे दिलचस्प पहलू है। लेखक इसमें संवाद की ऐतिहासिकता को रेखांकित करता है।
