Vanessa and Seigfreid the Magic Seahorse is a children's fictional story about a giant sea horse that becomes tangled in a fishing net and then subsequently saved by the heroine of the story Vanessa. The story is set between Sydney Harbour and beautiful Lord Howe Island and the mysterious Balls Pyramid that lies close by. The giant sea horses have many magic resources and can communicate with humans via their unicorn shaped horn on the top of their heads as well as showing humans how to breath under water. The giant sea horses originally lived at Pearl Island, near Toba in Japan, and taught the Toba Women how to breath underwater to find the treasured Black Pearls of the Pacific Ocean. The Toba women still dive today and stay under water for remarkable lengths of time without any outside assistance. After saving Seigfreid, Vanessa's underwater adventures begins almost disastrously in Sydney Harbour where she and her sister's are attacked by a large Bull shark and the fortunately saved by Seigfreid's magic powers. A strong bond is formed between Vanessa and Seigfreid and even after Seigfreid returns to his home hundreds of kilometers away, to Castle Rock they are able to communicate through Seigfreid's magic horn. Vanessa however is sworn to secrecy, apart from her sisters and brother, about the location of Castle Rock and their magic powers. The sea horses are afraid other humans will try to catch them for their magical powers as happened a long time ago. Vanessa, her sisters and brother eventually travel to where Seigfreid lives at Castle Rock (Ball's Pyramid) where another exciting underwater adventure begins. They meet a herd of thousands of giant seahorses who live on the sea grass plateaus underneath Castle Rock. They even get to see a sea horse race around the rock and are also there when the sea horses are attacked by three giant squid. Vanessa and her brother come to the rescue save the day as they show the sea horses how to harness their magic powers and successfully fight off the squids and become underwater heroes.

Essays, conversations, and archival investigations explore the paradoxes, limitations, and social ramifications of trans representation within contemporary culture. The increasing representation of trans identity throughout art and popular culture in recent years has been nothing if not paradoxical. Trans visibility is touted as a sign of a liberal society, but it has coincided with a political moment marked both by heightened violence against trans people (especially trans women of color) and by the suppression of trans rights under civil law. Trap Door grapples with these contradictions. The essays, conversations, and dossiers gathered here delve into themes as wide-ranging yet interconnected as beauty, performativity, activism, and police brutality. Collectively, they attest to how trans people are frequently offered “doors”—entrances to visibility and recognition—that are actually “traps,” accommodating trans bodies and communities only insofar as they cooperate with dominant norms. The volume speculates about a third term, perhaps uniquely suited for our time: the trapdoor, neither entrance nor exit, but a secret passageway leading elsewhere. Trap Door begins a conversation that extends through and beyond trans culture, showing how these issues have relevance for anyone invested in the ethics of visual culture. An archive-based, in-depth analysis of the surreal nature and science movies of the pioneering French filmmaker Jean Painlevé Before Jacques-Yves Cousteau, there was Jean Painlevé, a pioneering French scientific and nature filmmaker with a Surrealist’s eye. Creator of more than two hundred films, his studies of strange animal worlds doubled as critical reimaginations of humanity. With an unerring eye for the uncanny and unexpected, Painlevé and his assistant Geneviève Hamon captured oneiric octopuses, metamorphic crustaceans, erotic seahorses, mythic vampire bats, and insatiable predatory insects. Zoological Surrealism draws from Painlevé’s early oeuvre to rethink the entangled histories of cinema, Surrealism, and scientific research in interwar France. Delving deeply into Painlevé’s archive, James Leo Cahill develops an account of “cinema’s Copernican vocation”—how it was used to forge new scientific discoveries while also displacing and critiquing anthropocentric viewpoints. From Painlevé’s engagements with Sergei Eisenstein, Georges Franju, and competing Surrealists to the historiographical dimensions of Jean Vigo’s concept of social cinema, Zoological Surrealism taps never-before-examined sources to offer a completely original perspective on a cutting-edge filmmaker. The first extensive English-language study of Painlevé’s early films and their contexts, it adds important new insight to our understanding of film while also contributing to contemporary investigations of the increasingly surreal landscapes of climate change and ecological emergency.

Virginia is getting married. As her wedding day approaches, unwanted ghosts of her mother's past appear, unearthing a shocking past she never knew - nor wanted to. A comic nightmare about the mysterious hollows between parents and children and things that may be better left unsaid. ..". from the delightful opening pantomime, set to a recording of Frank Sinatra singing 'If I Had You, ' of a young couple meeting, courting, and deciding to marry, it's clear that a refreshingly original sensibility is at work. Mitnick has a lot more on his mind than obvious laughs in this consistently inventive and surprising comedy-drama." -Erik Haagensen, Backstage "Mitnick seems to be the rare young playwright more interested in his elders than in his contemporaries." -Alexis Soloski, Village Voice "Mitnick displays classy wit, gentle humanity, and flashes of formal innovation." -Scott Brown, New York
