The main focus of this book is on the interconnection of two unorthodox scientific ideas, the varying-gravity hypothesis and the expanding-earth hypothesis. As such, it provides a fascinating insight into a nearly forgotten chapter in both the history of cosmology and the history of the earth sciences. The hypothesis that the force of gravity decreases over cosmic time was first proposed by Paul Dirac in 1937. In this book the author examines in detail the historical development of Dirac’s hypothesis and its consequences for the structure and history of the earth, the most important of which was that the earth must have been smaller in the past.

This progress report summarizes the research work conducted under NASA's Solid Earth and Natural Hazards Program 1998 (SENH98) entitled High Resolution Gravity and Time Varying Gravity Field Recovery Using GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) and CHAMP (Challenging Mini-satellite Package for Geophysical Research and Applications), which included a no-cost extension time period. The investigation has conducted pilot studies to use the simulated GRACE and CHAMP data and other in situ and space geodetic observable, satellite altimeter data, and ocean mass variation data to study the dynamic processes of the Earth which affect climate change. Results from this investigation include: (1) a new method to use the energy approach for expressing gravity mission data as in situ measurements with the possibility to enhance the spatial resolution of the gravity signal; (2) the method was tested using CHAMP and validated with the development of a mean gravity field model using CHAMP data, (3) elaborate simulation to quantify errors of tides and atmosphere and to recover hydrological and oceanic signals using GRACE, results show that there are significant aliasing effect and errors being amplified in the GRACE resonant geopotential and it is not trivial to remove these errors, and (4) quantification of oceanic and ice sheet mass changes in a geophysical constraint study to assess their contributions to global sea level change, while the results improved significant over the use of previous studies using only the SLR (Satellite Laser Ranging)-determined zonal gravity change data, the constraint could be further improved with additional information on mantle rheology, PGR (Post-Glacial Rebound) and ice loading history. A list of relevant presentations and publications is attached, along with a summary of the SENH investigation generated in 2000. Shum, C. K. Goddard Space Flight Center

Several groups produce estimates of the Earth's time-varying gravitational field with data provided by the NASA/DLR Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission. These unprecedented highly accurate global data sets track the time-variable transport of mass across and underneath the surface of the Earth and give insight into secular, seasonal, and sub seasonal variations in the global water supply. Knowledge gained from these products can inform and be incorporated into ocean and hydrological models and advise environmental policy planning. Therefore, a complete understanding of the accuracy and variations between these different fields is necessary, and the most accurate possible solutions desired. While the various gravity fields are similar, differences in processing strategies and tuning parameters result in solutions with regionally specific variations and error patterns. This study analyzed the spatial, temporal, and spectral variations between four different gravity field products. The knowledge gained in this analysis was used to develop an ensemble solution that harnesses the best characteristics of each individual field to create an optimal model. Multiple methods were used to combine and analyze the individual and ensemble solutions. First a simple mean model was created; then the different solutions were weighted based on the formal error estimates as well as the monthly deviation from the arithmetic mean ensemble. These ensemble models as well as the four individual data center solutions were analyzed for bias, long term trend, and regional variations between the solutions, evaluated statistically to assess the noise and scatter within the solutions, and compared to independent hydrological models. Therefore, the form and cause of the deviations between the models, as well as the impact of these variations, is characterized. The three ensemble solutions constructed in this analysis were all effective at reducing noise in the models and better correlate to hydrological processes than any individual solution. However, the scale of these improvements is constrained by the relative variation between the individual solutions as the deviation of these individual data products from the hydrological model output is much larger than the variations between the individual and ensemble solutions.

For the past three decades, it has been possible to measure the earth's static gravity from satellites. Such measurements have been used to address many important scientific problems, including the earth's internal structure, and geologically slow processes like mantle convection. In principle, it is possible to resolve the time-varying component of the gravity field by improving the accuracy of satellite gravity measurements. These temporal variations are caused by dynamic processes that change the mass distribution in the earth, oceans, and atmosphere. Acquisition of improved time-varying gravity data would open a new class of important scientific problems to analysis, including crustal motions associated with earthquakes and changes in groundwater levels, ice dynamics, sea-level changes, and atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns. This book evaluates the potential for using satellite technologies to measure the time-varying component of the gravity field and assess the utility of these data for addressing problems of interest to the earth sciences, natural hazards, and resource communities.

Scientific Study from the year 2003 in the subject Physics - Theoretical Physics, University of Barcelona, language: English, abstract: By assigning the elementary Planck units to the units of Newton’s Gravitational Constant (G), it resulted that G is actually a function of vacuum (zero point) energy (ZPE) and that it can be therefore manipulated. This paper cites and discusses some possible kinds of Gravity manipulation. ZPE appears to reduce gravity as it is inversely proportional to the gravitational force. From Coulomb’s Constant, the “Planck charge” (qP) and the corresponding quantum vacuum (QV) lepton/photon ratio are calculated, the latter by dividing qP by the Planck mass. The QV-lepton/photon ratio is very different to the analogous baryon/photon ratio that is predicted by Standard Model, demonstrating that the QV and space-time are two different entities (e.g., that they have a different number of dimensions). A dimensional model for the QV that evolves from, and is supported by, the lepton/photon ratio is presented herein, together with emerging technologies. By expressing natural constants in terms of Planck units, we found that the Universal Gravitation Constant is the inverse of vacuum density matter-equivalent and the square of Planck time, being the former equal to Planck mass divided by Planck volume. The corresponding new equation of gravitation presented here reveals that gravitation can be manipulated via vacuum energy. Additionally, from Coulomb’s constant, we can derive the “Planck charge” and the corresponding density of virtual vacuum particle pairs. A discussion of the ramifications of these findings is also presented.

Knowledge of the density of the subsurface of a planet is crucial in determining its interior structure, and one can estimate the average bulk crustal density directly using the admittance between topography and gravity, which has been successfully used for the Moon and is being extended to Mars. The interpretation of gravity data is commonly done by computation of a gravity anomaly (GA) by correcting the raw data for a number of factors that impact the gravity field. Depending on the target science, different types of GA can be computed, the interpretation of which have been widely employed in geophysics to explore the interior of the Earth and other planets, through applications in airborne gravity, near-surface geophysics, regional geophysics, and planetary geophysics. Yet how to extract a great variety of information from GAs for applications in geophysics entails further investigation. Over the decades, remarkable progress has been made to extract information from GAs identified from data. For instance, a series of 3D inversion algorithms facilitates the extraction of the subsurface density distribution. With the improved processing based on dense gravity observations that yield high precision and high resolution GAs, more detailed geological information can be unveiled. When using the admittance between topography and gravity to estimate the crustal density, it is essential to identify what kinds of GAs to be used, such as Bouguer gravity or free-air gravity. Also, what appropriate approaches to scrutinize the applications of GAs in various case studies (e.g., calculating the geoid and estimating the elastic thickness) need to be decoded.
