Although the benefits of using grafted transplants are now fully recognized worldwide, the need to enlighten the scientific basis of rootstock-scion interactions under variable environmental pressures remains vital for extracting grafting-mediated crop improvement. This has prompted the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) Action FA1204 entitled 'Vegetable grafting to improve yield and fruit quality under biotic and abiotic stress conditions' aimed at systematizing research findings. The COST action allowed the development of a multidisciplinary network of partners targeting the root system and employing rootstock breeding to unravel the mechanisms behind rootstock-mediated crop improvement: the enhancement of productivity and fruit quality, and the sustainability of vegetable crops under multiple and combined stresses. The current book is the major output of the COST Action and contains nine chapters drawing on the 2012-16 activities of four Working Groups (WGs) dealing with 'Genetic resources and rootstock breeding' (WG1), 'Rootstock-scion interactions and graft compatibility' (WG2), 'Rootstock-mediated resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses' (WG3) and 'Rootstock-mediated improvement of fruit quality' (WG4). While recent advances of scientific knowledge constitute the core of this COST book, valuable practical information is also provided on rootstock-scion combinations, on applicable grafting methods, on the establishment of grafted transplants and on recommendations for the use of grafted plants as an effective tool for sustainable vegetable production. This book is compiled as a collection of scientific information and as a practical tool aimed at both the people involved in the commercial production and cultivation of grafted plants, as well as researchers interested in an understanding of the science and technology behind a grafted plant.

Grafting is a process that involves, the choice of rootstock and scion species; creation of a graft union by physical manipulation; healing of the union; and acclimation of the grafted plant. Grafting a susceptible scion onto a resistant rootstock can provide a resistant cultivar without the prolonged screening and selection required to breed resistance into a cultivar. Furthermore, grafting allows rapid response to new pathogen races, and, in the short-term, provides a less expensive and more flexible solution for controlling soilborne diseases than breeding new resistant cultivars. In addition, grafting may enhance tolerance to abiotic stresses, increase yield, and result in more efficient water and nutrient use; extend harvest periods, and improve fruit yield and quality.

It takes an average of 5–8 days after grafting for the rootstock and scion (top of grafted plant) to establish vascular connection and 14 days for the graft union to fully heal. During the first week after grafting, the scion is unable to receive water from the rootstock. It is therefore important to maintain proper environmental conditions to prevent water loss from the scion and promote rapid formation of the graft union. A healing chamber is a covered structure that maximizes humidity and reduces light to allow grafted plants to heal. The primary purpose of the healing chamber is to minimize transpiration (water loss) from the scion. There is currently limited information available on healing chamber design and use. This fact sheet provides step-by-step instructions for constructing and managing a small healing chamber that can accommodate several hundred plants."--Abstract.

Vegetable growers around the world only collect, on average, half of the yield they would obtain under optimal conditions, known as yield potential. It is estimated that 60–70% of the yield gap is attributable to abiotic factors such as salinity, drought, suboptimal temperatures, nutritional deficiencies, flooding, waterlogging, heavy metals contamination, adverse soil pH and organic pollutants, while the remaining 30–40% is due to biotic factors, especially soilborne pathogens, foliar pathogens, arthropods and weeds. Under climate change forecasts, the pressure of biotic/abiotic stressors on yield is expected to rise and challenge further global food security. To meet global demand, several solutions have been proposed, focusing on the breeding of varieties with greater yield potential, but this one-size-fits-all solution leads to limited benefits. In order to overcome the current situation, grafting of elite scion varieties onto vigorous rootstock varieties has been suggested as one of the most promising drives towards further yield stability. Specifically, the implementation of suitable rootstock × scion × environment combinations in Solanaceous (tomato, eggplant, pepper) and Cucurbitaceous (melon, watermelon, melon) high-value crops represents an untapped opportunity to secure yield stability and reliability under biotic/abiotic stresses. This Special Issue invites Original Research, Technology Reports, Methods, Opinions, Perspectives, Invited Reviews and Mini Reviews dissecting grafting as a sustainable agro technology for enhancing tolerance to abiotic stresses and reducing disease damage. In addition, the following are of interest: potential contributions dealing with genetic resources for rootstock breeding, practices and technologies of rootstock breeding, and rootstock–scion signaling, as well as the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying graft compatibility. In addition, the effect of grafting on vegetable quality, practical applications and nursery management of grafted seedlings and specialty crops (e.g. artichoke and bean) will be considered within the general scope of the Special Issue. We highly believe that this compilation of high standard scientific papers on the principles and practices of vegetable grafting will foster discussions within this important field.
