De danske heder udgør som Dybbøl Mølle og ”Der er et yndigt land” en essentiel del af vores forestilling om Danmark. Det kan vi især takke Steen Steensen Blicher for. I 1800-tallet beskrev han som hedens første store besynger landskabet så poetisk, at københavnske malere tog hele vejen til Jylland for at forevige det på lærredet og lytte til hjejlens melankolske sang. Dengang var den vidt udbredt på heden. I dag er den næsten uddød og kan som urfuglen ende med at forsvinde helt. I Heden kan tidligere biolog i Ringkøbing Amt Hans Jørgen Degn desværre ikke gå Blicher i bedene og fortsætte hededigterens lovsang af en skattet natur- og kulturarv. Bogen dokumenterer i stedet 150 års menneskelig påvirkning med alt, hvad dertil hører af stigende mængder kvælstof i luften, inkonsekvent lovgivning og for ringe og forkert naturpleje og beskyttelse. Hederne ligger ikke længere som åbne og vidtstrakte landskaber med lave lyngbuske, rensdyrlav og urter, men er ved at blive erobret af hurtigvoksende græsarter og fyrretræer, ligesom højproduktive marker og opdyrkning af moserne har gjort livsbetingelserne vanskelige eller umulige for hedernes oprindelige dyrebestand og plantevækst. Forfatterens konklusion er klar: Medmindre vi aktivt gør en indsats for at bevare hederne, vil Danmark ikke længere være helt så yndigt som i fordums tid.
