Il volume raccoglie gli atti del Convegno internazionale tenutosi a Volterra nel 2017 con la partecipazione di studiosi italiani e stranieri appartenenti a istituzioni di ricerca e di tutela e di giovani ricercatori e studenti universitari. E’ il secondo di due volumi di un’opera che cerca di illustrare le vie e le città d’Italia esistenti in epoca romana. I tracciati delle strade sono dedotti da due fonti primarie, l’Itinerarium Antonini Augusti e la Tabula Peutingeriana, da molteplici fonti secondarie, fra cui principalmente il Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World, e da reperti archeologiche, notizie storiche e altro. Per i centri abitati l’attenzione è dedicata principalmente ai centri di cui è stato possibile definire la cerchia delle mura e quindi l’estensione dell’abitato racchiuso fra le stesse.

Il lavoro è dedicato ad una categoria di oreficerie che, malgrado i numerosi accenni in vari contributi scientifici, non è mai stata oggetto di uno studio specifico. Vengono analizzati l’uso e il significato simbolico della bulla in base alle fonti storiche e letterarie antiche e alle interpretazioni degli studiosi moderni. Grazie ai dati offerti da queste importanti attestazioni, confrontati con le testimonianze storiche e letterarie e con le tematiche decorative riprodotte sulle stesse bulle è stato possibile tentare un quadro interpretativo sull’uso del monile nelle varie aree, soprattutto per risolvere la vexata quaestio se la bulla abbia assunto in Etruria lo stesso significato simbolico che rivestiva nel mondo romano. Il volume affronta anche il tema della riproduzione del monile nelle diverse produzioni artistiche, dalla coroplastica, che offre indubbiamente i dati più interessanti, alla ceramografia, alla megalografia e alle arti minori (in particolare gli specchi). L’ultima parte del volume è dedicata al catalogo descrittivo degli esemplari raccolti, ordinati secondo la tipologia individuata.

Nel volume si analizzano ventinove contesti, sostanzialmente inediti, rinvenuti nei sepolcreti settentrionali di Nepi (Gilastro, San Feliziano e San Paolo), databili fra l'età orientalizzante e quella arcaica, con alcune testimonianze del periodo romano. Le tombe furono individuate nel corso delle ricerche di F. Mancinelli Scotti (1889), di E. Stefani (1909-1911) e di un episodico intervento del 1918, come attestano i Giornali di Scavoe i taccuini di scavo conservati nell’Archivio del Museo di Villa Giulia e tra le Carte Stefani alla Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, anch’essi presi in esame nel presente studio. L'analisi dei contesti offre un valido spunto per l'elaborazione di un primo contributo alla conoscenza di Nepi preromana e all'indagine sulla sua etnicità – evidenziandone gli aspetti di continuità o di diversità con le realtà culturali circostanti – e per la definizione, per la prima volta in maniera organica e in senso diacronico, dei caratteri e dell’evoluzione di una comunità a lungo rimasta nell’ombra. Le evidenze confermano che questo centro di confine fra mondo etrusco e falisco rivestì un ruolo, già intuito ma fino ad oggi misconosciuto, di testa di ponte negli scambi commerciali e culturali della regione.

This volume debuts the new scope of Remote Sensing, which was first defined as the analysis of data collected by sensors that were not in physical contact with the objects under investigation (using cameras, scanners, and radar systems operating from spaceborne or airborne platforms). A wider characterization is now possible: Remote Sensing can be any non-destructive approach to viewing the buried and nominally invisible evidence of past activity. Spaceborne and airborne sensors, now supplemented by laser scanning, are united using ground-based geophysical instruments and undersea remote sensing, as well as other non-invasive techniques such as surface collection or field-walking survey. Now, any method that enables observation of evidence on or beneath the surface of the earth, without impact on the surviving stratigraphy, is legitimately within the realm of Remote Sensing. The new interfaces and senses engaged in Remote Sensing appear throughout the book. On a philosophical level, this is about the landscapes and built environments that reveal history through place and time. It is about new perspectives—the views of history possible with Remote Sensing and fostered in part by immersive, interactive 3D and 4D environments discussed in this volume. These perspectives are both the result and the implementation of technological, cultural, and epistemological advances in record keeping, interpretation, and conceptualization. Methodology presented here builds on the current ease and speed in collecting data sets on the scale of the object, site, locality, and landscape. As this volume shows, many disciplines surrounding archaeology and related cultural studies are currently involved in Remote Sensing, and its relevance will only increase as the methodology expands.
