Catalunya és un dels pocs països europeus que encara desconeix la riquesa del seu patrimoni musical pel que fa al repertori compositiu dels seus mestres de capella, organistes i músics que es conserva oblidat en nombrosos arxius (principalment eclesiàstics). Tanmateix, aquesta riquesa que encara roman desconeguda ha pogut sobreviure les nombroses escomeses bèl·liques que el nostre país ha sofert, sobretot en els darrers segles. Només cal imaginar, per un moment, quins serien els titulars de la premsa si hom anunciés la descoberta de milers d’obres desconegudes de literats de primera fila o de centenars de pintures i escultures inèdites d’artistes de relleu! Doncs exactament això és el que succeeix amb el repertori compositiu dels músics catalans dels segles pretèrits. És per tot això que en el si del Departament d’Art i Musicologia de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona vam endegar a partir del curs acadèmic 2001-2002, una nova línia de recerca amb la prioritat immediata de treballar per la recuperació dels fons de manuscrits musicals que constitueixen el patrimoni musical de Catalunya, mitjançant la confecció i l’edició, en el seu origen impresa, dels seus respectius inventaris catalogràfics. Ara, després de l’experiència de dotze cursos acadèmics, i gràcies a de les pràctiques integrades de les assignatures de Patrimoni Musical i Practicum d’Arxivística, impartides a la universitat i, sobretot, en els propis arxius que custodien els fons, podem dir, a la llum dels resultats publicats en els darrers anys, que hem endegat aquesta labor amb entusiasme i voluntat de servei al país, així com a la comunitat científica i artística internacional.
