Dopo ore di ricordi partecipati a una platea che via via si allargava ed entusiasmava, Beniamino era capace di chiudersi nel suo ufficio, al secondo piano della torre del Comune, per restarci ore, tra un bicchiere di whisky e una decina di sigarette aspirate senza filtro. Già, le sigarette. Ne fumava tante Beniamino. Si disintossicava un po' solo durante la novena di Santa Candida, partecipando a qualche cerimonia religiosa e, nel giorno della festa, alla processione per le vie del paese. Qualche ora senza nicotina tra inquietudine e nervosismo: era il "fioretto" di un laico, un po' agnostico, alla patrona dell'isola, nella quale i suoi conterranei ripongono, così pensava, la parte spirituale, e non solo, della loro umanità. Uno schianto ha fermato, solo momentaneamente, non ha spezzato il filo del progetto perseguito tenacemente e portato avanti da Beniamino. I giovani di Ventotene erano stati chiamati da lui a non sottrarsi al confronto con i "forestieri". In altre parole, a non prestarsi più, come un tempo, al facile e, a volte, troppo comodo ruolo di "colonizzati" per vocazione. Giovanni Maria De Rossi, nato a Roma nel 1942, è professore ordinario di Topografia antica presso l'università degli studi di Salerno e direttore del museo archeologico di Ventotene. Ha diretto le campagne di scavi per la realizzazione del Parco archeologico dell'isola, del quale è responsabile scientifico. È stato coordinatore di numerosi scavi nel Lazio e in Campania. È autore di numerosi testi scientifici. Carlo Picozza, nato a Priverno nel 1948, è laureato in Sociologia a Trento. Giornalista professionista, dopo varie collaborazioni, lavora con il quotidiano la Repubblica. Insegna Tecniche di scrittura. È autore di rapporti di ricerca e saggi di economia. Ha scritto: con Raimondo Ortu, L'innovazione dimezzata (Franco Angeli); con Fausto Raso, Giornalismo, errori e orrori (Mare nero e Gangemi); da solo, le Isole Ponziane (Vianello libri). È stato consigliere comunale a Ventotene dal 1988 al 1992.
