In the airline industry, the formation of highly integrated strategic alliances started during the 1990’s. Thereby, Star Alliance became the first global player when passenger airlines faced deregulation, and wanted to support their growth and expansion in international markets. For cargo companies, this type of integration came around later, namely in the beginning of 2000. As a result of the increased co-operation, major alliances were formed with the launch of SkyTeam Cargo and WOW. In the dawn of the new century, these alliances should lay the cornerstone for the achievement of a long term success through synergy effects, and higher competitiveness in terms of the individual and the group. A decade later, WOW and SkyTeam Cargo have evolved in different directions but, not all members or ex-members are pleased about the results. Strategic alliances in air transport have been studied widely but, most of the recent publications only cover the passenger side in this business. There are a lot of information and statements about the benefits that alliances can bring to ist members. But, the review of the literature shows that research is very sparse when it comes down to the evaluation of the actual impact of alliance integration on air cargo carriers’ standing. The objective of this book is to analyze and interpret the impact of a strategic alliance on cargo airlines’ revenue-tonne-kilometres key figures (provided by Airline Business 1998-2010), and market share developments. The author’s aim is on the one hand, to answer the question if air cargo operators did profit from alliance integration, and on the other hand, to give the reasons for this development. Besides, the book gives an overview about the market’s environment, the characteristics of air freight, and the history of WOW and SkyTeam Cargo. Further, the additional questions are discussed in detail: • How did carriers react to the challenges and opportunities in the market? • What are the main benefits or disadvantages for alliance members? • What major challenges do (prospective) members face in an alliance? • What are the core arrangements and prerequisites for alliance integration? • Is there a common success, are there stability factors and why do alliances fail? • What alternatives are there to alliance formation

Better Venture is a first-of-its-kind guide to diversity and inclusion in startups and venture capital—who funds, who gets funded, and how the industry can change. The industry’s lack of diversity and inclusion not only compromises moral standing—it means overlooking profitable businesses and talented founders. That costs hundreds of millions of dollars a year, and neglects ideas that could serve the needs of many more people. In this collection of interviews, stories, and research, we use the momentum that has been building in recent years to expand the conversation about DEI, venture capital, and the startup ecosystem, and to inspire more concrete action. Highlights: - 43 in-depth conversations with leading investors, entrepreneurs, and researchers, making it one of the most comprehensive and diverse sets of perspectives on the startup ecosystem ever assembled in one place. - An economic history of venture capital through a diversity lens. - On-the-ground stories from founders and VCs that explore ways to create a more diverse, inclusive, equitable, and profitable venture ecosystem. No blog post can give the deep understanding and vision needed to address the complexity of the topic. That’s why we came together to write this book and are bringing in so many voices to clarify the picture of what is and what could be. Over the course of two years of research and discussion with almost 100 experts, we set out to answer four questions: - Why has the industry been so slow to change? We map the economic origins and history of venture capital to understand how the economics of VC has contributed to the glacial pace of diversifying the industry. - What barriers are founders and investors facing now? We draw on contributions from investors, operators, founders, and journalists to help catalog the barriers for founders seeking funding, and for investors seeking entry and influence in the industry. - Can diversity really lead to higher returns? We bring in new research and data to help us understand how betting on underrepresented founders and investors is really the better venture. Why does diversifying the industry matter, and to whom? How is it linked to financial performance and better decision making? How will it improve innovation across industries? - What can be done for positive change? We discuss cost effective and evidence-based interventions, tools, and solutions that can help to make the VC and startup worlds more diverse and inclusive—and result in higher returns. We hope this book and the conversations it contains help fulfill the vision of a more diverse, inclusive, and profitable ecosystem. It’s time venture got better.

Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Express Air Cargo Development in the Pearl River Delta Region - Present and Future Submitted by Winnie, Tang Yee-Man for the degree of Master of Arts in Transport Policy and Planning at the University of Hong Kong in June 2007 Express Air Cargo industry or more commonly called Express Delivery Services (EDS) was originated in the United States during the late 1960s in response to the increasing demand for fast and reliable document delivery services. The industry grew rapidly after the deregulation of the U.S. air cargo industry in the late 1970s. The advent of the internet in the 1990s and the increasing demand from manufacturers and retailers for just-in-time (JIT) delivery caused the EDS companies' business expansion to include small parcels and freight services. As a result, the service network of the global players keep on expanding within US domestic and ultimately extending to the international markets. EDS companies, in particular the global players, set their foot on China soil during 1980s when China adopted economic reform and open door policy to the world markets. However, foreign companies desire to setup their China business establishment were required to signed Joint Venture agency agreements with a Chinese investor. Most often the partner investor was either a state-owned enterprise (eg. Sinotrans is the joint venture partner of DHL) or a private-owned enterprise (eg. Tianjin Datian W. Group Co., Ltd - Federal Express JV partner). In December 2006, China marks the fifth anniversary of its accession to the World Trade Organization "WTO," it is now possible for logistic, freight forwarding and EDS companies to set up their wholly foreign-owned enterprise independently in China. As China is gradually opening the logistic market to the world, this paper aims to provide an in-depth knowledge of Express Delivery Services industry and how the companies operate in the Pearl River Delta region under the current China Postal regulatory framework. The recent proposed postal reform has ignited a lot of debates and issues among the industry players and various government bodies. We will review in this dissertation its impact to the present and future development of this fastest growing industry in the new-age China. Sovereign wealth funds are a growing and dynamic force in international finance. The shifting international economic relations from capital rich states gives them new power in influencing the global agenda. Despite controlling trillions of dollars in the biggest companies in the world, little is known about the opaque funds of oil rich and non-democratic governments. This is the first book to compile a history of sovereign wealth funds recounting the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority's involvement with the scandal-plagued BCCI bank and Chinese arms exports to Iran. By constructing a history within the proper context of oil driven surpluses and large inflationary pressures with no international investment framework, this book explains the development and growth of sovereign wealth funds. The economics of capital surplus countries and investment strategies are examined in order to better understand sovereign wealth fund creation and growth. In a straightforward and accessible style, the author examines the complex and amazing growth of an unknown group of investors controlling trillions of dollars worldwide.
