A NATIONAL BESTSELLER & FINANCIAL TIMES BUSINESS BOOK OF THE MONTH "Full of powerful, practical lessons on changing how we think and act." –Eric Schmidt, former CEO and Chairman of Google "Many principles mentioned in the book helped us build Zoom, and they will help you as well." –Eric S. Yuan, Founder & CEO, Zoom Inspired by venture capitalists’ unique way of thinking, The Venture Mindset offers a transformative playbook for delivering results in a rapidly changing world from a top Stanford professor and a technology executive. Venture capitalists are known for their extraordinary ability to spot opportunities. They know how to identify emerging trends, how to bring new industries into being, and when to hold them and when to fold. Their unique mindset has made them the force behind world-changing companies such as Amazon, Google, Moderna, SpaceX, and Zoom. Stanford Professor Ilya Strebulaev has devoted two decades to studying VCs’ counterintuitive approaches to decision-making and the reasons behind the successes and failures of corporate innovations. Alex Dang has witnessed up close how VCs’ thinking and mechanisms can create successful businesses at companies like Amazon and McKinsey. Combining their insight and extensive experience, they present nine distinct principles that will help you make better decisions, transform your business, and achieve remarkable results, no matter your industry. In The Venture Mindset, you’ll learn: • One question VCs ask that will change the way you evaluate opportunities • Why you should encourage dissent and be wary of consensus • The number one killer of innovation in traditional corporate environments • Why it’s crucial to learn when to ‘pull the plug’ on initiatives • Why failure is not just an option, but a necessity Packed with entertaining stories and scientific precision, The Venture Mindset is a must-read for anyone who wants to be better equipped for the era of uncertainty when industry, company, and career can be disrupted overnight. The Venture Mindset will teach you more than how to simply survive. It’ll teach you how to win big.

The study extends the literature on venture capital by examining whether entrepreneur’s choice for an external investor and certain firm characteristics have an impact on venture success or not. The focus is set on the differences in value creation by venture capitalists and business angels for ventures of the high- and low-technology sector. The assessment of a data set including 252 Series A financing rounds by venture capitalist firms, business angels and collaborative investments of both investors conducted between 2005 and 2012 unveils value enhancing aspects for all three financing solutions. Overall, start-ups initially financed by venture capitalist firms perform best with regard to general venture success, whereas start-ups collaboratively supported by venture capitalists and business angels have the highest chances to exit successfully through a trade sale. It becomes further apparent that ventures located in one of the high-technology industries ‘internet’, ‘pharmaceuticals’ and ‘high-tech’, ventures that are longer established in the market and ventures whose Series A financing round was executed more recently indicate an enhanced likelihood of success.

This discussion paper focuses on venture capital finance in developing countries, the structuring of these funds, and how they are managed to maximize investment value. The paper documents what is happening in equity markets in developing countries-a relatively new sector in most emerging capital markets and one that is attracting increasing international investor interest. Presented is an analysis of new data on venture capital in developing countries gathered from two main sources: regional venture capital associations in Asia and Europe, and a survey administered by IFC on the portfolio structure of some 410 investments made by 53 venture capital funds in 19 developing countries. The data from the regional venture capital associations details sources and uses of venture financing flows by region, country, industry, type of investing institution, and stage of venture investment. The survey data details fund organization, deal screening, capital structure, agency cost characteristics of asset structure, measures of entrepreneur human capital, and investment monitoring and control. The report identifies several factors critical to venture fund investment performance and the organizational structures with which they are associated.
