"Vera, or the Nihilists" è il primissimo scritto per il teatro di Oscar Wilde. L'eroina principale, Vera, unitasi ai Nichilisti, ha in animo di sovvertire l'ordine monarchico russo dopo aver assistito alla deportazione in Siberia del fratello che apparteneva al gruppo di sabotatori rivoluzionari. La sua ambizione è tra le più grandiose: assassinare lo zar. L'ambientazione del play è la Russia di fine Settecento ma in controluce si legge l'Irlanda e il suo rapporto con l'oppressore coloniale, l'Impero britannico. La storia prende spunto dal tentato omicidio, da parte di Vera Ivanovna Zasulich, del governatore di San Pietroburgo Fëdor Trepov, nel 1878. Trepov si era reso famoso per la brutale repressione dei polacchi durante le rivolte del 1830 e poi nel 1863, e Vera aveva deciso di agire in seguito alla fustigazione di un prigioniero politico che da lui era stata decisa. Nel ricamare sull'episodio, Wilde modifica alcuni nomi e luoghi in questione, anche per evitare di incorrere in possibili censure, e nonostante l'evidente difficoltà di poter mai produrre in Inghilterra un play che avesse a che fare con i Romanov, dati i rapporti stretti tra la monarchia inglese e lo zar, non abbandonò presto le speranze di vederlo prodotto a teatro. Debuttò senza troppo successo a New York nel 1883. Apparentemente lontano per spirito dalle commedie successive di Wilde, tutte improntate alla brillante critica sociale delle classi alte della società inglese, è proprio qui che il drammaturgo punta di più sulla cultura del suo paese d'origine, l'Irlanda, e spiana la strada per il fondamentale saggio L'anima dell'uomo sotto il socialismo e per le istanze di libertà che animano le sue fiabe.

Vera; or, The Nihilists is a play by Oscar Wilde. It is a melodramatic tragedy set in Russia and is loosely based on the life of Vera Zasulich. It was Wilde's first play, and the first to be performed. In 1880, with only a few copies privately printed, arrangements were made with noted actresses for a production in the United Kingdom, but this never materialized. The first public performance was in New York City in 1883 at the Union Square Theatre, based on revisions made by Wilde while lecturing in America in 1882. The play was not a success and folded after only one week. It is rarely revived.
