In a society wherin Christian belief is less significant to an increasing number of people, believers are forced to account for the things they believe. Hence apologetics will be of increasing importance for both the church and the individual believer. Verantwoord geloof offers a sample card of Christian apologetics. It does not limit itself to one method or to a specific denomination. The members of the editorial board are professors in apologetics. Henk Bakker at the Baptist Seminary at VU Amsterdam, Maarten Kater at Theological University Apeldoorn and Wim van Vlastuin at the Hersteld Hervormd Seminary at VU Amsterdam. Contributors come from various denominations, universities and disciplines. In een maatschappij waarin het christelijk geloof steeds minder publieke betekenis krijgt, worden gelovigen gedwongen verantwoording af te leggen van wat ze geloven. Apologetiek zal daarom voor de kerk en de individuele gelovige zelfs nog belangrijker worden dan dogmatiek. Het handboek apologetiek voorziet in een leemte die er op dat terrein is. Verantwoord geloof biedt een staalkaart van wat christelijke apologetiek mag heten. Het beperkt zich niet tot een methode of tot een specifieke christelijke richting. De redactie wordt gevormd door universitair docenten apologetiek. Medewerking wordt verleend door een scala aan auteurs uit diverse wetenschappelijke disciplines. Met bijdragen van: prof. dr. A. Can religious faith be critical and remain recognizable as faith? Or is the idea of a critical faith a contradiction in terms? In this book an emerging new voice in the philosophy of religion argues in favor of critical faith. Playing on a double meaning of the word ‘critical’, the title of the book suggests that faith is not only a critical (crucial) component of human life, but also a component that can and should develop in a critical (intellectually vigilant) way. Taking John Locke’s reflections on the relationship between faith and reason as his point of departure, the author weaves his discussion around a wide array of intellectual figures and conversations. In addition to addressing important elements in the work of such historical figures as Aquinas and Locke, Kuipers also incorporates themes from recent discussions in the philosophy of science, feminist epistemology, philosophy of language, liberal theology, and critical theory. The book ends with a discussion of elements in Jurgen Habermas’s theory of communicative action, and offers a critical assessment of the merit of Habermas’s notion of critical rationality as a normative yardstick for the achievement of a critical faith.

Knowledge transmission and generation belong to the core mission of the public university. In democratic South Africa, the transformation of these processes and practices in higher education has become an urgent and contested task. The Faculty of Theology at the University of the Free State has already done some original work on the implications of these for theology. One area of investigation that has not yet received due attention concerns the role of theological disciplines, and especially the relation between academic disciplines and societal dynamics. This research project addresses the challenge and this volume reflects the intellectual endeavour of lectures, research fellows and a post-graduate student associated with the faculty. Each theological discipline has its own history and has already experienced reconstruction, both globally and in South Africa. Some of these genealogical developments and re-envisioning are mapped by the contributions in this volume. The critical questions addressed are: what are the contours of the (post)apartheid condition and what are the implications for responsible disciplinary practices in theology? The chapters convey an impression of the vitality of theology at the University of the Free State and in South Africa and give expression to fundamental shifts that have taken place in theological disciplines, and also of future tasks. This research project aims to stimulate reflection on responsible and innovative disciplinary practices of theology in South Africa, which, we envisage, will contribute to social justice and human flourishing. -Rian Venter, University of the Free State
