This first comprehensive analysis of the Third Reich's efforts to confiscate, loot, censor and influence art begins with a brief history of the looting of artworks in Western history. The artistic backgrounds of Adolf Hitler and Hermann Goring are examined, along with the various Nazi art looting organizations, and Nazi endeavors to both censor and manipulate the arts for propaganda purposes. Long-held beliefs about the Nazi destruction of "degenerate art" are examined, drawing on recently developed university databases, new translations of original documents and recently discovered information. Theft and destruction of artworks by the Allies and looting by Soviet trophy brigades are also documented.

One Hundred Years Of Philosophy written by Brian J. Shanley and has been published by CUA Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with History categories.

This collection originated in the centenary celebration of the School of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America. Written by experts in their fields, the essays are intended to provide a unique overview of philosophical developments in the 20th century. The first set of essays deals with philosophy in the English-speaking world. Thomas R. Russman argues that British philosophy is best understood as reflecting a long-standing preoccupation with the refutation of idealism. William Wallace narrates the development of the philosophy of science. Peter Simpson provides an account of Anglo-American moral theory, and Robert George discusses Anglo-American legal philosophy. The second set of essays deals with developments within the Catholic world. Frederick Crosson offers an overview of a century of Catholic social teaching, focusing on the central question of the relationship between the policial and the moral in such figures as Maritain, Murray and MacIntyre. Timothy Noone reflects on the course of medieval scholarship and philosophy in the 20th century. Kenneth Schmitz contributes an authoritative overview of German Catholic thought in the last century. Richard Schenk introduces readers to one of the most significant German Catholic philosophers of the latter part of the 20th century, Robert Spaemann, and his ethics. Also included is Spaemann's own analysis of the relationship between Christianity and modern philosophy. A third set of essays concerns continental philsophy. Nicholas Lobkowicz debunks the idea that there was a powerful spell cast on German thought by Karl Marx, and shows instead that what passed for Marx's influence was really Left-Hegelianism. Robert Sokolowski provides a detailed treatment of a different strain of German thought in his overview of phenomenology. A final set of essays considers new areas of philosophical concern. Daniel Dahlstrom explores prominent developments in philosophy and art that have brought aesthetics to the center of philosophical inquiry. Eugene Long chronicles the burgeoning discipline of the philosophy of religion. In the concluding essay, A.S. Cua explores the ways in which western philosophy has influenced 20th-century Chinese philosophy.

This volume explores the work of one of the greatest painters of the Netherlands: Hugo van der Goes. Hugo van der Goes (c.1440-1482) was the most important Flemish artist of the second half of the fifteenth century. His innovative pictorial compositions are characterized by monumental figures and realistic narrative moments. Van der Goes's works were admired by his contemporaries and were copied countless times until well into the seventeenth century, and they paved the way for the development of Flemish painting during the following centuries. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition of van der Goes's work at the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin and pays tribute to the character and importance of his surviving works. In this book, his great altarpieces are juxtaposed with more intimate panels, drawings, and miniatures as well as works from his immediate circle. Lavishly illustrated and rich in expert commentary, it presents a comprehensive overview of the creative oeuvre of a magnificent artist.

Design Dispersed written by Burcu Dogramaci and has been published by transcript Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-31 with Design categories.

Design Dispersed pursues the complex and heterogeneous connections between migration and design in the 20th and 21st centuries. The edited volume gathers contributions by international researchers and curators on the question of how design practices and (historical) objects articulate, respond to and critically reflect on migration, flight and displacement: Besides a collage which highlights the aesthetic effects resulting from the networking, overlapping and mixing of forms, another strand of the book looks at the political and social dimensions of design. How are design objects material modes of a critical inquiry on movements of people and things? What role do object trajectories play in the émigré movements of the 1930s and 1940s? Other texts follow the question of how migrants and refugees form their experience and political fight for acceptance into design and architectural productions. A final essay contributes to wordings and projections - what vocabulary do we need in order to adequately think and write about a design dispersed?
