La "verdad" ha pasado a ocupar recientemente un lugar protagónico en los debates de la opinión pública, en particular en su forma devaluada de "posverdad". Sus repercusiones son múltiples, porque se manifiestan en las decisiones de la política mundial, en las redes y medios de comunicación, y hasta en los dominios de la vida académica. Sobre el alcance de estos procesos se realizó, en Lima, en octubre de 2018, un coloquio interdisciplinario en el que participaron el renombrado historiador italiano Carlo Ginzburg, como invitado especial, y especialistas peruanos en ciencias humanas y sociales. Este libro recoge un sugerente material de reflexión sobre los variados y sorprendentes vínculos entre la historia, la verdad y la posverdad. Miguel Giusti (editor) es filósofo, profesor principal del Departamento de Humanidades de la PUCP. Es doctor en Filosofía por la Universidad de Tubinga, Alemania. Previamente, realizó estudios de Filosofía y Ciencias Sociales en la PUCP y en universidades de Italia, Francia y Alemania. Llevó a cabo una estancia postdoctoral en la Universidad de Frankfurt bajo la dirección de Jürgen Habermas, gracias a una beca de la Fundación Alexander von Humboldt. Ha ejercido la docencia y la investigación en varias universidades del Perú, América Latina y Europa. Se ha especializado en filosofía moderna y en historia de la ética, temas sobre los que ha publicado varios libros y numerosos artículos. Entre sus últimas publicaciones se hallan Disfraces y extravíos. Sobre el descuido del alma (2015), El paradigma del reconocimiento en la ética contemporánea. Este libro recoge los resultados de una investigación en torno a un tema de gran actualidad: la posverdad, abordado desde tres ámbitos importantes del saber humano: la TEOLOGÍA —la posverdad como contraposición entre verdad y mentira—, la FILOSOFÍA —presencia de la posverdad en la filosofía actual— y el DERECHO —tránsito desde la posverdad a la posverdad judicial—. El relato posverdadero, según el Oxford Dictionary, se configura, no a partir de los hechos, sino de los sentimientos y creencias de los individuos, y su fin último se ordena a modelar y determinar el rumbo de las conductas sociales. Ya no se trata de ofrecer un discurso que tenga correspondencia con los hechos; por el contrario, la consideración de lo real deja de ser un problema. En su lugar, se construye un discurso que es el producto de un consenso de los dialogantes para lograr un criterio intrínseco que sea aceptable para todos. De este modo, el proceso discursivo viene a reemplazar la visión directa de lo real, pero... ¿es un discurso convincente y avalado por la comunidad necesariamente verdadero? Es este uno de los más importantes desafíos que nos plantea nuestra circunstancia presente y nuestros autores dejan aquí un valioso aporte.

How we arrived in a post-truth era, when “alternative facts” replace actual facts, and feelings have more weight than evidence. Are we living in a post-truth world, where “alternative facts” replace actual facts and feelings have more weight than evidence? How did we get here? In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Lee McIntyre traces the development of the post-truth phenomenon from science denial through the rise of “fake news,” from our psychological blind spots to the public's retreat into “information silos.” What, exactly, is post-truth? Is it wishful thinking, political spin, mass delusion, bold-faced lying? McIntyre analyzes recent examples—claims about inauguration crowd size, crime statistics, and the popular vote—and finds that post-truth is an assertion of ideological supremacy by which its practitioners try to compel someone to believe something regardless of the evidence. Yet post-truth didn't begin with the 2016 election; the denial of scientific facts about smoking, evolution, vaccines, and climate change offers a road map for more widespread fact denial. Add to this the wired-in cognitive biases that make us feel that our conclusions are based on good reasoning even when they are not, the decline of traditional media and the rise of social media, and the emergence of fake news as a political tool, and we have the ideal conditions for post-truth. McIntyre also argues provocatively that the right wing borrowed from postmodernism—specifically, the idea that there is no such thing as objective truth—in its attacks on science and facts. McIntyre argues that we can fight post-truth, and that the first step in fighting post-truth is to understand it.

In Discorrelated Images Shane Denson examines how computer-generated digital images displace and transform the traditional spatial and temporal relationships that viewers had with conventional analog forms of cinema. Denson analyzes works ranging from the Transformers series and Blade Runner 2049 to videogames and multimedia installations to show how what he calls discorrelated images—images that do not correlate with the abilities and limits of human perception—produce new subjectivities, affects, and potentials for perception and action. Denson's theorization suggests that new media theory and its focus on technological development must now be inseparable from film and cinema theory. There's more at stake in understanding discorrelated images, Denson contends, than just a reshaping of cinema, the development of new technical imaging processes, and the evolution of film and media studies: discorrelated images herald a transformation of subjectivity itself and are essential to our ability to comprehend nonhuman agency.

Each of us contributes his share. But we tend to take the situation for granted. Most people are rather confident of their ability to recognize bullshit and to avoid being taken in by it. So the phenomenon has not aroused much deliberate concern. We have no clear understanding of what bullshit is, why there is so much of it, or what functions it serves. And we lack a conscientiously developed appreciation of what it means to us. In other words, as Harry Frankfurt writes, "we have no theory." Frankfurt, one of the world's most influential moral philosophers, attempts to build such a theory here. With his characteristic combination of philosophical acuity, psychological insight, and wry humor, Frankfurt proceeds by exploring how bullshit and the related concept of humbug are distinct from lying. He argues that bullshitters misrepresent themselves to their audience not as liars do, that is, by deliberately making false claims about what is true. In fact, bullshit need not be untrue at all. Rather, bullshitters seek to convey a certain impression of themselves without being concerned about whether anything at all is true. They quietly change the rules governing their end of the conversation so that claims about truth and falsity are irrelevant. Frankfurt concludes that although bullshit can take many innocent forms, excessive indulgence in it can eventually undermine the practitioner's capacity to tell the truth in a way that lying does not. Liars at least acknowledge that it matters what is true. By virtue of this, Frankfurt writes, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are.
