Das vorliegende Buch will einen Beitrag zur retrospektiven Erhellung der DDR-Gesellschaft -hier insbesondere gespiegelt im Teilsystem der Wissen­ schaft -leisten. Es versteht sich sowohl als "Baustein" in der heutigen Dis­ kussion um die Besonderheiten der DDR-Soziologie, als auch als nützliche Materialquelle für die zukünftige Forschung. Selbst nach nunmehr über sieben Jahren seit dem Ende der DDR gibt es kein eindeutiges, unumstrittenes Bild über die Funktion der DDR-Soziologie im Staatssozialismus, über ihre innere Verfaßtheit und über die Rolle der Akteure. Es gibt zwar eine erstaunliche Vielzahl von Büchern, Aufsätzen, Beiträgen aus unterschiedlichsten Perspektiven zu diesem Thema - in der Datenbank SOLlS (Sozialwissenschaftliches Literaturinformationssystem) sind annähernd 100 nach 1991 erschienene Titel nachgewiesen - ein ge­ schlossenes Bild zur Einschätzung des Phänomens DDR-Soziologie läßt sich aber nicht daraus ableiten. Betroffenheitsperspektiven und Außenbe­ trachtungen stehen nebeneinander, häufig in essayistischer Form. Zwar kristallisieren sich wiederkehrende Feststellungen und Thesen zu Bedingun­ gen und Funktionsweise des soziologischen Forschungsprozesses in der DDR heraus, ebenso allerdings auch feststehende Urteile wie z. B. die zur Systernkonformität und zur Unproduktivität oder die zur staatstragenden Rolle der Soziologie. Erklärungen hierfür bleiben aber fragmentarisch; um­ fassende systematische wissenschaftssoziologische Betrachtungen gibt es kaum und sind auch ohne empirische Materialsammlungen nicht zu leisten. Seit 1992 erstellt das Informationszentrum Sozialwissenschaften (IZ) durch seine Abteilung in der GESIS-Außenstelle in Berlin eine solche Sammlung, um als sozialwissenschaftliche Infrastruktureinrichtung mit den Mitteln der Dokumentation eine Materialbasis bereitzustellen, die eine Auf­ arbeitung des Nachlasses der DDR-Sozialwissenschaften durch die For­ schung ermöglicht.
