Zu Ende ging das Jahr 1989, »da in Europa von Tag zu Tag und Land zu Land so vieles, und so wunderbar leicht, anders zu werden schien.« Könnte er sich in einer Zeit, als »das große Märchen der Welt« sich selber forterzählte, an einem weltfremden Gegenstand, der Jukebox ersuchen? Im Hotel fand er ein Zimmer, das ihm Fläche genug bot für ein Blatt Papier, Bleistifte und Radiergummi. Zunächst war ihm sein Versuch über die Jukebox als Dialog auf der Bühne, als »Bühnen-Zwiegespräch« in den Sinn gekommen, jetzt, in der Einsamkeit und Freiheit von Soria, drängte sich ihm auch die Befreiung von gegebenen literarischen Formen auf, eine Befreiung für neue, unbekannte literarische Möglichkeiten. Der Held von Handkes neuer Erzählung ist die Erzählung selbst. Ihre Struktur bringt den Leser immer wieder dazu, den Verlauf des Erzählten für sich aufzunehmen. Roland Barthes hat geschrieben, ein Text errege ihm dann als Leser die größte Lust, »wenn es ihm gelingt, sich indirekt zu Gehör zu bringen, den Kopf zu heben, etwas anderes zu hören«. So wirken auch Handkes Texte; man solle beim Lesen, so sagte er einmal, innehalten, tief einatmen, »sich von der Sonne bescheinen lassen, auch wenn diese gar nicht scheint«. Selten hat Handke so wie hier das Konkrete, das Äußere einer Landschaft, einer Stadt, einer Zivilisation der Zeitgeschichte beschrieben und damit auch das Innere getroffen. In dieser Erzählung halten sich Phantasie und Welt in großem, schönem Gleichgewicht.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 2,0, Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Peter Handkes Erzählung „Versuch über die Jukebox“ ist ein sehr vielschichtiger Text, der sich dem Leser erst nach mehrmaliger und gründlicher Lektüre erschließt. Einige Kritiker dieses Textes hätten sich dies zum Vorsatz machen sollen. So schreibt Hajo Steinert am 15.11.1990 in der Weltwoche: Doch statt dessen erleben wir einen Schriftsteller in der Krise, einen, der zunächst nicht so recht weiß, worüber er schreiben soll, einen, für den das Thema Jukebox gleichermaßen Verlegenheitslösung und Opposition ist in einem Jahr, das vieles im Handumdrehen für „historisch“ erklärt. Einmal von dem groben Verständnisfehler, dass „der Schriftsteller nicht so recht weiß, worüber er schreiben soll“ abgesehen, kann man diesen Text bei weitem nicht so einfach abtun. Ich möchte in dieser Arbeit vor allem die Kritik Steinerts widerlegen und die verschiedenen Themen und Ebenen dieses Textes darlegen. Um das zu erreichen, werde ich mich vor allem auf das von Handke entworfene Zeitgerüst innerhalb des Textes stützen. Ich werde im folgenden Kapitel vorerst systematisch die Zeitstruktur beschreiben und in den nachfolgenden Kapiteln näher auf die Intentionen eingehen, welche durch dieses Zeitgerüst deutlicher werden. Doch zu Beginn möchte ich noch kurz die Gattungsfrage klären. Handke selbst nennt den Text „Erzählung“. Diese Bezeichnung wird durch verschiedene Gattungsmerkmale innerhalb des Textes gestützt. Aus Perspektive eines Schriftstellers berichtet eine Erzählinstanz, die Erzählfunktion ist. Der Blick wechselt zwischen Innen- und Außensicht. Bleibt allerdings im Modus des showing. Dies alles sind Argumente für eine Erzählung. Das stärkste Argument für eine Erzählung ist das Zeitgerüst, welches entworfen wird. Die Zeit vergeht, auch wenn es immer wieder Rückblicke in verschiedene Vergangenheitsebenen gibt. Die Geschichte entwickelt sich weiter.
