Vertebrate palaeontology is always in the news: fossil hunters argue about which was the biggest dinosaur of all, or the biggest flesh-eater; someone claims to have found dinosaur blood cells, and even to have extracted dinosaur DNA; an ancient fossil bird is announced that adds 100 million years to their history; ever-older specimens of human beings are unearthed in Africa. When I wrote this book, in 1989, I felt that there was a need for an up-to-date account of what is known about the history of vertebrates, but also for a summary of the latest of these exciting discoveries. The first edition was published in 1990. When I was asked to prepare a second edition, I set aside 2 months to make a few changes to the text, and add some new illustrations. I thought the task of revision would be fairly minor. Now, after 5 months of intensive work, very little of the original edition remains untouched. I was amazed at how much had happened in my science in the course of 7 years, and how the new work has substantially changed our views, par ticularly in disentangling the relationships of vertebrates. In updating the book, I made no deliberate attempt to include 1995 and 1996 references, and yet the sheer numbers show how many major new discoveries there have been. This makes me very nervous about the future shelf-life of the book if this rate of discovery and exciting new research work continues.

The first vertebrate animals appear in the fossil record over 520 million years ago. These lineages diversified and eventually crept ashore leading to further evolutionary divergence and the appearance of the familiar charismatic vertebrates of today. From the tiniest fishes, diminutive salamanders, and miniaturized lizards to gargantuan dinosaurs, enormous brontotheres, and immense whales, vertebrates have captured the imagination of the lay public as well as the most erudite academics. They are the among the best studied organisms. This book employs beautifully rendered illustrations of these diverse lineages along with informative text to document a rich evolutionary history. The prolific and best-selling author reveals much of the latest findings regarding the phylogenetic history of vertebrates without overwhelming the reader with pedantry and excessive jargon. Simultaneously, comprehensive and authoritative while being approachable and lucid, this book should appeal to both the scholar, the student, and the fossil enthusiast. Key Features Provides an up-to-date account of evolution of vertebrates Includes numerous beautiful color reconstructions of prehistoric vertebrates Describes extinct vertebrates and their evolutionary history Discusses and illustrates the first vertebrates, as well as familiar lineages of fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals Reviews mass extinctions and other important events in the diversification of vertebrates Related Titles Bard, J. Throughout history man has been discovering fossil bones. Our interpretations of these discoveries through the centuries provides an insight into the development of scientific knowledge. This book traces the history of vertebrate palaeontolgoy from the discoveries and interpretations of fossil bones by the Greeks and Romans and their role as evidence for the biblical flood through to the formulation of the synthetic theory of evolution after the First World War. The author shows how the pioneering work of Cuvier in the 19th century and the inspiration of Darwin and others led to modern theories of evolution. He goes on to look at the great palaeontological finds which resulted from the opening-up of the American West, the industrial exploitation of minerals in Europe and colonial expansion in Asia and Africa.
