Es geht dabei um das Grundvertrauen nach Erik H. Erikson und um die theologische Tugend des Glaubens nach Thomas von Aquin und der christlich-katholischen Tradition. Beide werden zunächst aus der Sicht der ihnen entsprechenden Wissenschaften untersucht und dargelegt: Das Grundvertrauen aus psychologischer und der Glaube aus theologischer Perspektive. So wird im Folgenden von einem interdisziplinarischen Ansatz, von der Theologie und der Psychologie, ausgegangen. In Kapitel 1 werden nicht nur das Vertrauen im Allgemeinen und das Grundvertrauen im Besonderen erörtert, es soll ebenfalls die Angst als Antipode zum Vertrauen in den Blick genommen werden. Besonders fokussiert wird hierbei die generalisierte Angststörung in Gegenüberstellung zum Grundvertrauen. Vermittelnd wird dabei das Angstverständnis des Philosophen Martin Heidegger hinzugezogen. Hinsichtlich des Glaubens wird in Kapitel 2 zunächst dessen Begriffsgeschichte innerhalb der Entwicklung der Theologie, unter besonderer Beachtung der Spannung zwischen fides qua und fides quae, skizziert. Diese traditionelle Unterscheidung innerhalb des Glaubens, der als Tugend verstanden wird, ist hilfreich, um einen adäquaten Anknüpfungspunkt für das psychologische Grundvertrauen zu finden. Nachdem die beiden Grundbegriffe Grundvertrauen und Glauben geklärt wurden, soll in Kapitel 3 das Verhältnis zwischen beiden untersucht und eine Bestimmung dieses Verhältnisses versucht werden. Hier wird zweiteilig vorgegangen, indem zunächst unter Zuhilfenahme fundamentaltheologischer Begriffsklärungen das Verhältnis von Grund- und Gottvertrauen in den Blick genommen und die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede beider Vertrauensweisen herausgestellt werden. Es folgt zuletzt die Eröterung, inwieweit Grundvertrauen und fides qua miteinander korrespondierende Begriffe sein können und ob man hier die Schnittstelle des psychologischen, sowie des theologischen Begriffs begründet ausmachen kann. In der abschließenden Zusammenfassung soll die Relevanz des psychologischen Grundvertrauens für die Theologie und die des Glaubens für die Überwindung von Angst und Angststörungen in einem kurzen Resümee herausgestellt werden.

This study confronts the current crisis of churches. In critical and creative conversation with the German theologian Ernst Troeltsch (1865-1923), Ulrich Schmiedel argues that churches need to be “elasticized” in order to engage the “other.” Examining contested concepts of religiosity, community, and identity, Schmiedel explores how the closure of church against the sociological “other” corresponds to the closure of church against the theological “other.” Taking trust as a central category, he advocates for a turn in the interpretation of Christianity—from “propositional possession” to “performative project,” so that the identity of Christianity is “done” rather than “described.” Through explorations of classical and contemporary scholarship in philosophy, sociology, and theology, Schmiedel retrieves Troeltsch’s interdisciplinary thinking for use in relation to the controversies that encircle the construction of community today. The study opens up innovative and instructive approaches to the investigation of the practices of Christianity, past and present. Eventually, church emerges as a “work in movement,” continually constituted through encounters with the sociological and the theological “other.”
