Um livro imprescindível volta a ser lançado pela Editora Kelps, Viagem ao Araguaia de Couto Magalhães, cuja primeira edição se deu em 1863 através de Folhetos de O Federalista e uma segunda edição em 1889, em plena ascensão da Primeira República. Traça seu roteiro inicial do Rio de Janeiro a Goiás, cujo trajeto é uma lição de amor ao território, pleno de ensinamentos e de afirmações históricas, compreendendo desde aquela época que "o pastor, ou vaqueiro, tem na caça, na pesca e no gado, o necessário para a vida" , demonstrando que os habitantes das terras dos goyazes tinham aquilo que historiadores anos depois defenderam: auto suficiência de produção, ou como destacou Paulo Bertran, uma economia de abastância. Couto Magalhães afirma com todas as letras que as viagens pela Estrada de Ferro eram monótonas, como forma de defender ainda mais sua ideia quase fixa de navegação pelo Araguaia e Tocantins. Sugeria mudar a Capital para Leopoldina uma vez que esta estava às margens do Araguaia e evocava Saint-Hilaire e Pohl, viajantes estrangeiros que descreveram Goiás, para justificar a inoperância do desenvolvimento de nossa Província. Criticava ferozmente a postura de alguns proprietários de terras de Goiás por não deixar prosperar a mudança da capital e defende a topografia de Leopoldina em liga-la, futuramente, à foz do Amazonas e do Rio da Prata. Argumentos de um ser apaixonado por uma ideia obsessiva. Em 18 de fevereiro de 1864, a Marinha, sob estes argumentos descritos por Couto Magalhães emite sinais de que o Projeto de Navegação Fluvial pelo Araguaia e Tocantins era viável e seria estudado. A História, porém, tinha outros planos.

O livro Nas águas do Araguaia – a navegação e a hibridez cultural trata de um estudo sobre o processo de hibridez nas cidades ribeirinhas do Araguaia, ocorrido com as políticas de povoamento e navegação a vapor do século XIX. Mostra como se processou a hibridez cultural e como a identidade foi sendo construída, com o desenvolvimento das políticas fundiárias, defesa e comercialização agrícola ao longo do rio e de seus afluentes. Por meio do livro o leitor conhecerá a multiplicidade, a diversidade e a complexidade que marcaram a evolução temporal do espaço rio, como via de integração, trabalho e entretenimento, ressaltando o seu poder de provocar a coesão social, além de fazer papel mediador entre estados. A pesquisa buscou suporte em uma gama de fontes documentais primárias e secundárias, cuja finalidade foi compreender os mecanismos que geraram a hibridez cultural nos sertões do Araguaia. A primeira parte descreve o rio como um espaço que provoca, no imaginário humano, o desejo de conhecer seus mistérios. Mostra a política de povoamento adotada pelos governantes, que teve como propósito, auxiliar o incremento da navegação. Analisa a forma de implantação dos presídios militares, e sua influência sobre a navegação a vapor, como agente indutor de profundas alterações nas estruturas sociais até então existentes (os aldeamentos). A segunda parte trata do processo de implantação da navegação a vapor e a ideia da implantação da estrada de ferro visando permitir o transporte em trecho terrestre paralelo às cachoeiras dos rios, as quais impediam a continuidade da navegação, utilizadas para escoar os produtos que circulavam de Leopoldina a Patos, no Pará, e estreitar os laços de relações comerciais e políticas.

Intimate Frontiers: A Literary Geography of the Amazon analyzes the ways in which the Amazon has been represented in twentieth century cultural production. With contributions by scholars working in Latin America, the US and Europe, Intimate Frontiers reads against the grain commonly held notions about the region —its gigantism, its richness, its exceptionality, among other— choosing to approach these rather from quotidian, everyday experiences of a more intimate nature. The multinational, pluriethnic corpus of texts critically examined here, explores a wide range of cultural artifacts including travelogues, diaries, and novels about the rubber boom genocide, as well as indigenous oral histories, documentary films, and photography about the region. The different voices gathered in this book show that the richness of the Amazon lays not in its natural resources or opportunities for economic exploit, but in the richness of its histories/stories in the form of songs, oral histories, images, material culture, and texts.
