Nel corso della singola giornata in cui si svolge la vicenda, Mr Blank riceve le telefonate e le visite di alcune delle persone ritratte nelle fotografie. Ma le facce e i nomi non dicono nulla a Mr Blank. Loro invece sembrano conoscerlo bene, anzi si aspettano qualcosa da lui. Con un impianto narrativo a metà tra una commedia di Pirandello e una pièce beckettiana, Viaggi nello scriptorium affronta il tema della responsabilità morale dello scrittore nei confronti dei personaggi d'invenzione.

Ao lado do persistente desejo sexual, a fabulação literária parece ser a única força que o mantém vivo. Desse início intrigante, mero fiapo de história que sugere uma trama de espionagem, Paul Auster torna a surpreender seu leitor, encaminhando-o sutilmente a uma reflexão sobre o ato de escrever ficção. Não por acaso, o nome do protagonista é Blank, que em inglês indica o papel em branco, o espaço vazio, o vácuo a ser preenchido, o alvo a atingir. Um dos encantos dessa pequena narrativa está justamente no fato de colocar o leitor numa posição análoga à de Blank, que tem que descobrir aos poucos quem é e o que faz naquele local. Saindo um pouco de seu registro habitual, de ambientação realista, urbana e contemporânea, mas sem perder o encanto envolvente de sua prosa, o autor da Trilogia de Nova York compartilha com o leitor, em Viagens no scriptorium, as agruras e delícias do ofício de inventar e escrever histórias.
