Em 21 de agosto de 1415 as naus portuguesas desembarcaram no norte da África e tomaram a praça de Ceuta, que ficou oficialmente sob domínio português até meados do século XVII. Tal evento, a princípio inserido em uma série de ataques ibéricos ao mundo árabe, começa a ganhar, depois de realizada a passagem do Cabo do Bojador (1434), outros sentidos. São os desdobramentos desses sentidos o objetivo desta pesquisa; ou melhor: o alvo do trabalho são as etapas da construção histórico-literária quatrocentista que fez com que a conquista de uma cidade magrebina para servir de polo bélico passasse, nas narrativas posteriores, à condição de ponto de partida de uma expansão marítima de proporções muito mais dignificantes e de um império português ainda a ser idealizado e inventado. Visando, portanto, mapear os papéis históricos que a cidade de Ceuta foi desempenhando desde a sua tomada até o início do século XVI, a hipótese condutora do livro é de que o ideal imperialista de D. Manuel I (1469-1521) foi forjado sobre a noção de uma unidade do projeto de conquista das terras de além-mar que remontava à tomada de Ceuta. A partir de textos datados do século XV e início do XVI, entre os quais narrativas de cronistas, relatos de viagem, conselhos escritos pelos cortesãos, cartas régias, bulas papais e obras em verso, o trabalho tenta desmontar as peças da fabricação de uma espécie de teleologia de um império marítimo ainda por vir no século XV, mas que, no XVI, já tinha alcançado uma forma mais acabada.
