Conocido ante todo como autor del Viaje de España, Antonio Ponz (1725-1792), secretario de la Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando y figura esencial de la política cultural borbónica, publicó en 1785 el Viaje fuera de España, testimonio de su recorrido por Europa en 1783. Su doble propósito, defender a España de las críticas de viajeros y filósofos extranjeros, a la vez que contribuir a la reforma económica, social y artística, es bien representativo de los objetivos y tensiones del reformismo ilustrado. Desde una perspectiva unas veces crítica y otras admirativa, afloran en él las sombras y luces de la Francia prerrevolucionaria, el dinamismo económico y social de Gran Bretaña, las libertades políticas, intelectuales y religiosas en las Provincias Unidas, los recuerdos del pasado hispánico en los Países Bajos del Sur.
